Paul Simon - Graceland (Expanded Edition)

You can not even guess how much I wanted to dislike this album when it came out. I was in the middle of my hip-hop heyday and had no time for albums by oldies (no matter how much they were played and loved in my youth). It was many years after it's initial release that I actually gave the whole album a listen. Everybody loved "You Can Call Me Al' when it came out so I won't even pretend - I dug it and the video. But that's where I drew the line. It would have made me the subject of much clowning to go about representing for this back when it came out. Even though nearly all of us grew up on Simon & Garfunkel and Paul's solo works - it just wasn't the right time back then. High school is a crazy place, isn't it? After I finally became old enough to not give a damn what anyone thought of my taste in music - I put this disc in the cd player. My only regret was waiting so damn long, this album is solid from top to bottom with classics. Not just good songs, mind you - classics. So, if you are possessed of any ignorant, pre-conceived notion of what is cool and what isn't - drop it and enjoy. It's only when we can all decide we don't care if others agree with us - we're going to listen (and do) what pleases us and brings no harm to others - that is truly growing up. You will not regret this album - listen especially to 'Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes', 'The Boy In The Bubble' ... ah hell - just listen to the whole thing.

It took me fucking YEARS to appreciate this one. I associated it with my parents and their friends who listened to it all the time in the late 80s.
