DaddyRich's Love Compilation Disc 1



Since DaddyRich is lucky to have so much love in his life for so many years (look at that face above, what woman could possibly refuse?), I figured I would share some of the songs that bring it to my feeble old mind. Some are oldies, others are punk rock songs and many are somewhere in between. I also am answering another request by hobbling together another compilation. It seemed to me that of someone like Bob Dylan can do theme shows, why cannot DaddyRIch? Well, for one thing, I lack the software necessary, but I do have lots of music and can put together folders with my favorites - almost the next best thing. So, listen to these with one you love or are trying to get to love you. Who knows? It may do the trick. There will be a few more of these if you peeps are digging it. Let me know....

Motown Meets The Beatles - Various Artists



Oh boy, what a great idea and it bore such good fruit. Some of Motown's best voices singing some of the best songs ever written, what fan could ever ask for more? In my mind, the only thing missing here is Marvin Gaye singing 'In My Life' - that would have been so beautiful....sigh. But he does do 'Yesterday' and hits it right out of the park, in my humble opinion. SO many great one's here..... just download and enjoy already.

Various Artists - 1234 Punk and New Wave 1976-1979 [5 Disc Box Set]



Most all my good friends here at the Ape know well how I feel about most comilations.... nuff said. But every once in a while you find one that has some real merit as a collection of really great songs. This here would be one example. Now, of course, if I had the choice I would have included/omitted a few but am overall impresed with this pretty-well comprehensive collection of one of my favorite era's of music. A certain online store named for a race of beautiful, giant warrior women has this to say - and I find it apt -

"No single box set--however sumptuously packaged, however comprehensively compiled--could hope to contain the bewildering, diverse array of musical styles and opinions that was brought together under the loose description "punk" between 1976 and 1979. There were so many fresh ideas and concepts--the final, irreversible emancipation of women in rock and the creation of an entirely new, non-R&B, guitar-based music form--contained within that one word, no compilation could hope to represent it fairly. 1-2-3-4 has a damn good try, though. Five CDs, featuring 100 tracks from the good, bad and downright ugly of punk.
This is a compilation for the historical completist, taking in everyone from the early trail-blazers (Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Ramones, Television) through to the 1978 Rough Trade independent outburst (Raincoats, Slits, Pop Group) and the politically-charged (Gang Of Four, Au Pairs, Tom Robinson Band).

The post-punk "new wave" explosion is represented by the Buzzcocks, Devo and XTC as are the art-rockers by Siouxsie, Ultravox and Pere Ubu).

Even the novelty records get a mention: Jilted John and Television Personalities. The list is virtually endless.

Considering the genre's (relative) lack of commercial impact at the time, it's astonishing how its repercussions are still being felt today. The punk explosion was Year Zero for the music press; it was the direct precursor of the American grunge movement and it became the initial working model for the DIY dance and rap explosions. Moreover, punk was a point of influence that no "indie" band creating music today can hope to avoid.Elastica, the Stereophonics,Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring, PublicEnemy and Prodigy are just some of the bands the can find their mirror selves in punk. This is a mind-blowing compilation. --Everett True"

Various Artists - Greatest Hits of The New Romantic (3 Disc Set)



Quite a collection of some of the 1980's best music is available on this set - and there is surely something for everyone. The term "New Romantic" came to me probably a little late, I first recall hearing it in 7th grade when groups like Duran Duran and Culture Club were scoring big chart hits but not yet registering on DaddyRich's musical radar. As with most "scenes" in music, it's fans and closest adherents is what turned me off of the "movement". It was basically a bunch of guys with spiked, frost-tipped hair and eye-liner in too-tight pants that the girls liked instead of me. More than enough reason to hate it, in my book. Boy those fellas must cringe when old photos are brought up to them. DaddyRich never took the eye-liner plunge, thank God. They all reminded me of the "Anarcho-Romantics" in Cerebus "High Society" (recommended reading if you haven't already), kinda wimpy and over-dressed. But I digress (yes again), and am putting you all to sleep with my stories of the old days. Enjoy the goodness and be kind to the short, fat nerds - they grow up to be handsome music bloggers sometimes. Again, only 2 of the 3, I have been busy lately...

Is there a greater name for roots reggae lovers? Even though my reggae posts are among the least visited, I know I have helped a few to appreciate the art form. I will also continue to post for the wonderful folks who have expressed their gratitiude and in hopes of getting more folks converted. 80's Hits Stripped - Various Artists



Since I am on the 80's tip here for the moment (we never know what's coming next, do we?) I thought I would add this for the other old fogeys who visit the Ape. A good 10 of these 15 tracks were well worn on my record player on a regular basis back in the old days, so if anyone else feels any guilt about that like I do - these versions will validate your youthful indiscretion. I tried to ignore my love for a lot of these for the last 20 years, claiming to have "moved on", but I suppose I never totally did.
In a time when image seemed to matter so much more than actual talent some groups and individuals really made some music that has stood the test of the last 25 years and most likely will continue to as well. Even though my 1980's tastes have usually run to to the more alternative acts for a long time now, there is quite a bit to appreciate here.

Johnny Cash & Friends - BBC Show 1968




1968 - The watershed year for Johnny's comeback from the mess he had made of his earlier years. This year saw him sober and touring again, with June, Carl Perkins and The Statler Brothers. It was also the same year he did his famous concert for the inmates at Folsom Prison and I hear they even released a record of that show. This particular gem, though, does not have a lot of information available, I am sorry to say. Looking up "Johnny Cash BBC Concert 1968" on google yielded nothing of substance. So I can give you my take on it here. It definitely sounds like it's been ripped from vinyl and after a few seconds of sound adjustment at the very beginning it is a vintage Cash performance. Many of his hits are in evidence and his stage banter, as ever, is worth the download. As well, we get some songs from the great Carl Perkins. He was a great conscience for popular music and although flawed (as we all are) he was a giant amongst Lilliputians in our world. You are missed, Mr. Cash.

NME Presents The Essential Bands 2005 (2 Discs)


I know it's a year old already, you don't have to tell me. But I don't have this years yet and still think this set kicks ass. I don't know how highly regarded the NME is overseas but since I first stepped foot in to an import record store and saw one, I have loved it. Although it often seems more like a rock music gossip rag - they consistently feature more of my favorite bands than any other mag I have read. And their compilations are usually top-notch, including the best of Brit-pop and other genres. This set is graced by the likes of The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Gorillaz and many more. Also, I promise to post the new one as soon as it is in my hot little hands. Track list is mad extensive and I am hellafied tired tonight so just read the photo of the back of the case. This, aside from some Hank Williams Sr., is the only religious music I have ever been able to stomach in all my years. If the Rastafarians hadn't bet on the wrong horse (the scandalous Selassie) they would have one of the more appealing belief systems I have ever run across. Their devotion, love of the natural world and music is well worthy of our praise. Some of the best of reggae legends are in their finest form on these discs - The Melodians dreamy and relevant 'Rivers Of Babylon' with my favorite line 'So let the words of our mouths/and the meditation of our hearts/be acceptable in thy sight' - truly poetic. Also in top form are Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, The Ethiopians, Ken Boothe and a whole who's who of reggaes best and brightest.

Okay, so none of these are really 'new' Nicktoons anymore but it's got some great stuff on it. At one time or another I have been ensconced on a couch with at least one of my boys enjoying these shows. Those of us here without kids will definitely want to skip this one. This one is for errie who has been so kind in remembering to send thanks for all the kids discs. I really miss some of these shows that they no longer air - like Hey Arnold and CatDog. Mojo Magazine - The Roots Of Hip-Hop


While I don't always find these "Roots Of" discs to be commendable or complete, I am almost always impressed with the folks at Mojo Magazine. This contains some great old funk and rap joints for your ears and leads DaddyRich to believe that he should make his own 'roots of hip-hop series' - food for thought. Great oldies from Flash, Lee Dorsey ("Everything I do gon' be funky..."), James Brown and some strange inclusions like Blood, Sweat & Tears (WTF?) make this a nice little nugget for your collection.

Various Artists - Brats On The Beat: Ramones For Kids


These kids discs totally kick ass over what we had when I was a pup. The kind folks at SFRP had this available and Daddy could not resist sharing it here with you fine folks. Here's a little blurb -

Various Artists - The Massive Sounds Of Rap Legends Archive (3 Discs)



You know DaddyRich couldn't stay away from the old school for too long, right? I could find no information on this one - so my apologies in advance for the lack of cover photo's and such. The inclusion of some of these rappers whom I have never heard of leads me to believe that this is a U.K release of some sort. Also, the inclusion of Tupac and B.I.G. leads me to believe that they whoever pieced it together has no real idea of what 'old school' means - but I digress. Whether those cuts are a detraction from the whole I will let you good people decide - I can say that overall I dig it. I am usually always grateful for any document (however bad sounding or hastily put together) from that wonderful golden era of music. The odd numbering of cuts leads me to believe I have an incomplete copy of this, but any b-boy would agree that SOME of this is a lot better than NONE of it. As ever, if someone else has some information they would like to share - please do, it's always welcome. Peace.
