Various Artists - 1234 Punk and New Wave 1976-1979 [5 Disc Box Set]



Most all my good friends here at the Ape know well how I feel about most comilations.... nuff said. But every once in a while you find one that has some real merit as a collection of really great songs. This here would be one example. Now, of course, if I had the choice I would have included/omitted a few but am overall impresed with this pretty-well comprehensive collection of one of my favorite era's of music. A certain online store named for a race of beautiful, giant warrior women has this to say - and I find it apt -

"No single box set--however sumptuously packaged, however comprehensively compiled--could hope to contain the bewildering, diverse array of musical styles and opinions that was brought together under the loose description "punk" between 1976 and 1979. There were so many fresh ideas and concepts--the final, irreversible emancipation of women in rock and the creation of an entirely new, non-R&B, guitar-based music form--contained within that one word, no compilation could hope to represent it fairly. 1-2-3-4 has a damn good try, though. Five CDs, featuring 100 tracks from the good, bad and downright ugly of punk.
This is a compilation for the historical completist, taking in everyone from the early trail-blazers (Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Ramones, Television) through to the 1978 Rough Trade independent outburst (Raincoats, Slits, Pop Group) and the politically-charged (Gang Of Four, Au Pairs, Tom Robinson Band).

The post-punk "new wave" explosion is represented by the Buzzcocks, Devo and XTC as are the art-rockers by Siouxsie, Ultravox and Pere Ubu).

Even the novelty records get a mention: Jilted John and Television Personalities. The list is virtually endless.

Considering the genre's (relative) lack of commercial impact at the time, it's astonishing how its repercussions are still being felt today. The punk explosion was Year Zero for the music press; it was the direct precursor of the American grunge movement and it became the initial working model for the DIY dance and rap explosions. Moreover, punk was a point of influence that no "indie" band creating music today can hope to avoid.Elastica, the Stereophonics,Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring, PublicEnemy and Prodigy are just some of the bands the can find their mirror selves in punk. Genesis - Archives Box Set 1967-1975 (4 Discs)



I know, anyone who really wanted this box set probably already has it, agreed. But I am going to begin with the first 2 discs and the beautiful sound of 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' played live to an L.A. audience in 1973. The sound is so crisp and sounds better than many of the concerts I am getting today. Each musician in this band was quite accomplished and Gabriels voice...have I not said enough before about the voice of Mr. Gabriel. Such a voice. The entire - double album - played straight through? Who could write a decent double album now and then go play the whole damn thing live with such precision? Not too damn many. Sure, the other discs are full of highlights and rarities and I may post them, if badgered enough, but the point is to find a comfortable spot and listen to this show - mind blowing stuff.

Bob Dylan - Masterpieces Disc 1 of a 3 Disc Set


I have been waiting for a long time to put a Dylan album here (more like too pre-occupied with other music) and now have the chance. Here on my 200th post!!!! Anyway, I love Bob Dylan's music and since I posted Beck today as well I figure I may as well put up the progenitor and the protege. I could be wrong but sincerely believe Beck is the heir-apparent to Mr. Zimmerman's mantle of folk hero. Although Beck displays more musical variety and versatility, these things were more readily available to him and not Dylan because of great leaps in technical musical applications. But I digress... This first disc in the amazing box set contains a number of every fan's favorites and the others are just as chock full, I just wanted to post a Dylan sampler here and see if anyone wanted me to post the rest (like my Cult Box Set posts, remember those?), so send an old man a message and I will get right on it. Also, surprise surprise, I have a LOT of Dylan alternates/outtakes/demos - including the ridiculously large 26 disc 'Jewels & Binoculars' set that only the most hearty fan would appreciate (don't even ask me to post that behemoth). Richard Pryor - That Nigger's Crazy (Disc 2 of 'And It's Deep, too')


My first Richard Pryor album in my wayward youth and it forever changed my mind and use of language. I blame Richard for all the cussing I do in my everyday conversations - 'motherfucker' is a word I use at least 20 times a day. This particular nugget isn't from a vinyl rip like most of my other Pryor joints, it is from the amazing 'And It's Deep, Too' 9 disc set that was long overdue and welcomed by me (and so many others) as a gift from above, much like Richard himself. I am playing with the idea of putting the whole set here, so keep your eyes open.

Sublime - Everything Under The Sun Box Set (3 Discs)


I have previously mentioned my love for this band here before and will reitterate for all. When they were playing it was always a good time no matter where we had to go to see them, never once let down. Not too many bands that I have seen live were as on-point as these guys were. I haven't really seen anything on here I didn't already own, but not too many folks are as obsessive as DaddyRich about these things. Brad Nowell was a genius and an idiot and the world is that much poorer for his being gone. Go buy the box. Here's a little from the internets -

"Sublime's musical bouillabaisse drew on punk, folk, hip-hop, and reggae to make a soundtrack for a party attended by skaters, rastas, hippies, fratboys, and gangstas alike. Devo - Hardcore Devo Vol. 2 1974-1977

The Hardcore Devo albums are a collection of 4-track basement demos recorded by the band between 1974-1977. Many tracks are earlier versions of some of Devo's best known tracks, which would later be re-recorded and used on subsequent Devo records [eg. 'Jocko Homo', 'Mongoloid']. However, a majority of the tracks on the two albums are demos which were never re-used and remained unreleased until the Hardcore Devo compilations.
Volume Two is described as even more 'Hardcore' than Volume One with more 'experimental' tracks, but not without its share of 'Classic Devo', with their trademark sound already showing.

The Doors - Essential Rarities (Bonus Disc For Box Set)


Some kind souls requested this wonderful disc last week and who is Daddy to refuse? I have looked long and hard for more Doors demo's and alternates but have been flummoxed by the internets. I will give another look to my archives because now my interest is piqued - I may actually be able to piece together my own Doors rarity compilation from stray tracks I have laying around that have notbeen compiled before. Various Artists - The Massive Sounds Of Rap Legends Archive (3 Discs)



You know DaddyRich couldn't stay away from the old school for too long, right? I could find no information on this one - so my apologies in advance for the lack of cover photo's and such. The inclusion of some of these rappers whom I have never heard of leads me to believe that this is a U.K release of some sort. Also, the inclusion of Tupac and B.I.G. leads me to believe that they whoever pieced it together has no real idea of what 'old school' means - but I digress. Whether those cuts are a detraction from the whole I will let you good people decide - I can say that overall I dig it. I am usually always grateful for any document (however bad sounding or hastily put together) from that wonderful golden era of music. The odd numbering of cuts leads me to believe I have an incomplete copy of this, but any b-boy would agree that SOME of this is a lot better than NONE of it. As ever, if someone else has some information they would like to share - please do, it's always welcome. Peace.
