Funkadlelic - Hardcore Jollies (1976)



Continuing with the Funk for you children. This is an early shot of Funkadelic and, of course, worthy of any house party or day at home getting funky with our own bad selves. If anyone has any rare P-Funk, please drop a line and I will post it here with credit to you. I have not been able to find any, and that is really saying something with the connections that I have.
A nice and concise description is found below from the internets-


"After splitting from their first record label in 1976 (the independent funk/soul company, Westbound), Funkadelic signed with Warner Bros. and soon after issued HARDCORE JOLLIES, their first recording for the major label. Since their rough and ready self-titled debut appeared in 1969, the band had been evolving musically with each release. As HARDCORE JOLLIES shows, Funkadelic had transformed into a smooth dance machine. The production and performances are much sleeker, planting the seeds of such future P-Funk smash albums as ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE. From the opening chords of the album's first track, "Comin' Round The Mountain," the listener is drawn into the fun-electric-party-world of the new Funkadelic. The funky guitar licks are much tighter and less organic than those on such earlier albums as MAGGOT BRAIN, and they lend shape to such standout numbers as "If You Got Fun, You Got Style" and "Smokey." Here we also find a live version of the group's perennial showstopper, "Cosmic Slop," a number originally featured on the 1973 release of the same name. HARDCORE JOLLIES shows that Funkadelic had altered its sound slightly. The move pays off nicely, with world domination just 'round the corner for these musicians."

Funkadelic - Free Your Mind.... And Your Ass WIll Follow



I am just realizing that my Parliament/Funkadelic collection is quite extensive. I seem to pull out a post here every few days, hope everyone still enjoys them. This was a share at the great blog chrisgoesrock and fileld a vacancy in my funk collection and I am real grateful. It's hard to beat an album title and philosophy like "free Your Mind..." and they bring the funk extra deep on this slab so you will be forced to move and groove. Tracks like 'Funky Dollar Bill' and 'I Wanna Know If It's Good To You' make this one a keeper and a must for when the party starts. Always glad to help improve your interplanetary funksmanship children. Keep on funkin'. P.S. I am still on the lookout for the remastered edition with bonus tracks and wil post when found.

Funkadelic - Uncle Jam Wants You (Rescue Dance Music From The Blahs)



Oh yes, another Funkadelic post and another classic. This os one you can throw on during a party and just get down for an hour straight. Hell one of the songs seems like an hour long anyways. I still have vivid memories of them at Lollapalooza in 1994 and the funk was in the house (or Velodrome, as it were) and asses were shaking. Such great stuff and is still played on vinyl in my house whenever possible, it makes house work not so boring. I love some hip-hop as you all know and you can listen close and see how this record has been raped for music by some of the genres giants. When you do something this good it's bound to have a lasting effect on folks, I guess.

Parliament - First Thangs




A collection for the true fan of the P-Funk sound. The sound on this record isn't your fully-evolved bouncing funk of later works by these musical geniuses. It appears to my ears than George Clinton & Co. were still messing around to find that true P-Funk sound that we all know and love. Many styles are apparent here, early funk, Southern Soul, Country and rock and roll. So, listen with an ear unprejudiced by later works and you will thoroughly enjoy the great music. Also, a couple of cuts here were alter re-worked into songs we all know and love Enjoy the adventure, children.

Funkadelic - Cosmic Slop



I know my Funkadelic posts are all out of order, but I am doing these without worrying about being a elitist/completist. The ever-great qwertderek has done these in 320, which beats my old copies all to hell. As ever, amazon is on point -

"With each successive release, Funkadelic was streamlining its sound, a process culminating in such early '70s classics as COSMIC SLOP. The group's acid rock-heavy early work had metamorphosed into straight-up, party hearty funk, with lyrics that alternate between the serious (the title track) and the humorous ("No Compute"). It may not be as awe-inspiring as their masterpiece, MAGGOT BRAIN, but, more than any other Funkadelic album, COSMIC SLOP stresses the importance of the almighty groove. The album opens with one of Funkadelic's funkiest tracks ever, the largely instrumental "Nappy Dugout." It's clear from the start that Funkadelic, despite a revolving cast of characters, is one of the tightest bands around. The aforementioned title track is perhaps the group's best known number. It tells the downhearted tale of a young single mother who has to turn to the shadier side of the streets to support her family, but the music has obvious pop leanings. Other highlights include the vicious Led Zeppelin-esque rocker "Trash A-Go-Go," the album-closing soul ballad "Can't Stand the Strain," and the brokenhearted "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure."

Marvin Gaye - Live In London 1977




Continuing with the Motown Madness this morning y'all. I was so glad and grateful to find this one on cd since my vinyl of it is so battered. Besides being one of the smoothest cats with that voice in the music business he was also a great song writer whose best music came out after he got out from under Berry Gordy's thumb of performing songs written by others. Of course, he also had many problems, but isn't that what we've some to expect form the truly talented? He performs on this disc at the Palladium in London and is in fine form, as usual. Put it on when things need to get groovy at your pad, I plan on it. Including great versions of 'Trouble Man' and (Daddy's Fave) 'Got To Give It Up' with some aweosme medlies of his greatest you will be groovin'. Sing with Daddy - " I used to go out to parties/and stare at the ground..."

Stevie Wonder - Light My Fire



I did my damndest to find out more information about this one but came up short. My apologies - although you will enjoy the record. Another of Uncle Bill's vinyl (@320) rips of classic plastic. A quick glance at the track list will tell you that this a cover album by the coolest of the cool - Stevie Wonder. I respect him more and more each time my dumb ass tries to play any musical instrument - and I am not blind. This has a catalog number mfp 50420 but google didn't hook an old man up with anything. Regardless of background info, all that is really needed is to play and enjoy. The choice of his covers is indicative of it's time of recording. A few Dylan, a Doors tune (obviously) and a great Billie Holiday song 'God Bless The Child', among other great jams given the Wonder touch. Everyone here knows of my fawning worship of all music Stevie - so of course, this comes highly recommended.

Parliament - The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein


I was going to bore you with my wandering thoughts of how much Daddy loves the Funk, but I found a nice, concise article online which sums this album up pretty well.

"Following closely on the heels of MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION, the group's undisputed high-water mark, THE CLONES OF DR. FUNKENSTEIN furthers George Clinton's conceptual and musical master plan to funkify the world. THE CLONES unravels the Funk Mob's cosmology and populates it with a cast of mythological characters that includes Starchild (introduced on MOTHERSHIP) and the Funk overlord himself, Dr. Funkenstein. By this album, Parliament have almost completely moved away from the guitar-dominated psychedelic soul of their early '70s output and entrenched themselves in the realm of lighter, horn and keyboard-driven experimental dance music. While weakened by over-conceptualization and Parliament's sometimes too-goofy sense of humor--qualities that would seriously mar the group's later output--this disc is nonetheless full of freaky, utterly original jam-formula compositions bolstered by outstanding musicianship. "Do That Stuff" and "I've Been Watching You" are highlights. Though old school P-Funk fans may see this record as Parliament's bid for the commercial mainstream, it is still impossible to deny the unique, exuberant music within."

Be prepared, children - more P-Funk on the horizon. It's gonna be a funky December.

94 East : Early Prince Recordings



While many collectors already have these recordings I am offering them here per a request. These are as far back as my Prince collection goes and although there are quite a few instrumentals, it's easy to see the man and his skills coming to the fore. Apparently a musician had married his cousin and heard of the kids abilities , which earned him an invitation to jam with his band 94 East. As far as I know these are the earliest Prince on tape and welcome anyone with earlier examples to post them. There is a volume 2 of these as well if anyone wants them posted, just let me know. As ever, much more Prince in the pipeline.

Parliament - Mothership Connection


Oh yes. Yes indeed. DaddyRich's first funk record and what a way to get started, huh? This music can move even zombies to get on the dance floor. I have yet to meet anyone immune to the Parliament/Funkadelic groove. Their particular brand of funk is most greaty realized here on this disc and althiugh there's no rarities, demos, etc. involved (except for the puzzling inclusion of the "bonus" track), this album is an integral part of any music fan's collection. Trust me on this and thank me later.

Stevie Wonder - Lost Treasures : Rarities from the 1960's-1990's


Of course, among my first posts and I have been meaning to return to the genius of Stevie Wonder. There are not enough words for me to express how much I love and admire Stevie. If any group of people deserve to have a grudge against everyone, I think it's those with severe disabilites. Although I am only partially disabled, I can only imagine the pain of having a total lack of some important ability. Sight and sound would be extra tough to live without on a daily basis. Not withstanding the treatment they get as children with cruel taunting and such but even how difficult life can be as an adult. Anyways, I am digressing - don't let DaddyRich get on his hobby horse here. So, I have a great admiration for those who can write and perform beautiful pieces of music and even more for those who do (and have done) it against great odds. This little gem of a disc contains some rare Stevie songs and unreleased classics. Excellent tracks like 'Uptight', 'Superstition' and an excellent cover of Marvin Gaye's 'Stubborn Kind Of Fellow' - damn, I should really be posting some Marvin Gaye rarities here. Listen and love the music people - that is an order. Also, remember me whenever you happen across some Stevie rarities.

Mojo Magazine - The Roots Of Hip-Hop


While I don't always find these "Roots Of" discs to be commendable or complete, I am almost always impressed with the folks at Mojo Magazine. This contains some great old funk and rap joints for your ears and leads DaddyRich to believe that he should make his own 'roots of hip-hop series' - food for thought. Great oldies from Flash, Lee Dorsey ("Everything I do gon' be funky..."), James Brown and some strange inclusions like Blood, Sweat & Tears (WTF?) make this a nice little nugget for your collection.

Parliament - Mothership Connection 1976 Polygram Records

It clearly does not get any better than this. Hands down the best funk album of ALL TIME and if you don't agree then you ain't heard it. From the first time I dropped the needle on this album my ears haven't been the same. I replayed after a long hiatus in 1999 after my back surgery and was groovin' and funkin' with my walker in the living room (really, ask Tasha). The funk can lift the spirits when they are low and this is the antidote to any blahs you may be having. "P-Funk, uncut Funk....The Bomb" Enjoy y'all and leave a comment for a brother once in a while.
