Queen - The Unobtainable Royal Chronicle Vol. 1

Since we can all agree that Queen is universally loved and respected - I have been requested to post some more rarities. This is a great place to start, The Unobtainable Royal Chronicle has such a regal ring to it, does it not? Some great rarities here that have proven difficult to find for some and impossible for others. The first 12 tracks are some hard-to-find Queen songs that we are all familiar with, in one form or another and the final tracks are Freddie Mercury performing as "Larry Lurex" (don't ask because I don't know) and 3 tracks from Brian May's pre-Queen band, Smile. I have many more Queen rarities and boots laying around here in my office and hard drive and will post more as we continue along here my friends.

Queen - Rock In Rio 1985

Need any more be said? It's Queen in 1985, at the peak of their powers and in front of hundreds of thousands of crazy Brazilians. Oh, if I had been old enough to see Queen perform then, but at 14 I didn't have the money or the passport necessary for the deal. This is a great document of the legendary band and the sound is simply awesome considering the date and technology available at the time. I have a nasty feeling that much more Queen will be available this month - thanks to all who had writtne so kindly asking for more. Daddy can't refuse the kind requests.

Queen - Royal Rarities Disc 1


Ah, the greatest voice in rock and roll is here in fine form. Oddly enough, my searches online have not yielded a collection with the same track listing I have here on this disc. There are apparently a few from the 'Royal Rarities' set but they have vastly different sound, songs and quality. I am perfectly satisfied with this one, though - so I hope you will be as well. I already figured any fan of Queen rarities would have in their collection the excellent 'Unobtainable Royal Chronicles' set (if you don't - just ask) so I decided to make this 'Royal Rarities' my first Queen-related post. Please just ignore the disco-club remixes and cover versions by far inferior bands and feast upon the demo's & rarities.

Jim Croce - Live: The Final Tour


I was going to share this bad boy here for my 100th post but am a bit past that now so here we ae. One of the best things about doing your own blog is not having to cater to anyone else's musical tastes. If people coem and visit and download - that's great. But it's the sharing of music that really touches you and holds a special place that's important. I really hope at least one person who has never listened to Croce will be turned on by this post and my blog. Some of my earliest musical memories are from his great songs and I feel there was a great loss to the world by his dying so young. The man had a great gift for communication in song and I doubt his like may be seen again any time soon. This live show demonstrates his gift for putting his real-life experinces in song. It's not often that we get a glimpse of how a song becomes what we hear on radio and records. Jim lays down some great and funny stories and also plays impeccable versions of his hits for a grateful crowd. It's a tragedy that soon after this show his life would be over in a plane crash. Give a listen and you, too will be convinced. Pay special attention to the 'trucker dialogue' and the "Ball Of Kerrymuir' - great stuff.

Alice In Chains - Publisher Demos 1989



I have searched high and low for more information on these, aside from what already seems obvious - they are demos from 1989. Apparently recorded for the publishing company before they were signed and broke out in their huge way. One of the very best to come from a city that is no stranger to birthing great bands. Sadly, Layne Staley was another heroin casualty from that era, why is herb just not good enough for some people? Anyways, great early Alice here and Cantrell's monstrous guitar chops are in evidence for all to marvel at.

The Clash - D.O.A. (Demos, Alternates and Outtakes)



If Rolling Stone magazine ever got one thing right, it was calling The Clash "The Only Band That Matters" way back in the day. I cannot truly describe the wonderful effect their music has had on the shaping of my mind in my youth. A punk rock band that wasn't afraid to , eloquently I may add, say what they meant. Sure, there was a lot of screamers back then with loads of rage and little vocabulary who had a message as well. But no one could match these boys for energy and vision. They made reggae, ska, skiffle, punk and so many other styles sound so sweet. So, of course, DaddyRich has loaded up on their rarities and gems - and will be posting a few here for other like-minded individuals. Although I already had this one for a while, all praise is due to AlienOnAcid and the mighty SFRP for hooking the world up to the kind stuff. Keep your eyes open here, kids - more to come!

Pink Floyd - The Complete Zabriskie Point Sessions


A nice little flank of Floyd for you good people to relax to. I always enjoyed the regular versions from the Zabriskie Point film and these are an amazing revelation for all friends of Floyd. And who could possibly resist a song titled 'Funky Dung'? Not I said the monkey. Hope you enjoy.

From the interwebs - "This is an amazing album containing 15 outtakes from the famous sessions for the Antonini cult classic. After recording for several days only 3 songs ended up on the official soundtrack. Over the years several outtakes appeared on dubious and soundwise poor bootlegs. In 1997 a revised edition of Zabriskie Point was released, including 4 previously unreleased Floyd takes. But there was more, much more, as this release proves."

The Doors - Essential Rarities (Bonus Disc For Box Set)


Some kind souls requested this wonderful disc last week and who is Daddy to refuse? I have looked long and hard for more Doors demo's and alternates but have been flummoxed by the internets. I will give another look to my archives because now my interest is piqued - I may actually be able to piece together my own Doors rarity compilation from stray tracks I have laying around that have notbeen compiled before. Sex Pistols - Spunk



A wonderful Sex Pistols rarity that everyone really must have in their collection as a companion piece to "Never Mind The Bollocks..." As always, wiki has a great story on it. And here it is...


"Several parties, including some members of the British music press, immediately suspected that the group's manager, Malcolm McLaren, was responsible for the original Spunk bootleg. This would have been in breach of the band's record contract with Virgin, which was itself planning the release of Never Mind the Bollocks when Spunk appeared. An October 1977 Sounds article by Chas de Whalley discussed Spunk and made reference to this conveniently coincidental timing.
The evidence for McLaren's involvement is speculative, although it can be noted that his company, Glitterbest, retained the rights to the demo recordings as well as the master tapes — and the demos appearing on Spunk were presented in excellent quality. Also, as evidenced by the original album's "LYN-" matrix number prefix, the record had clearly been pressed in the UK by Lintone, a legitimate independent pressing plant that would presumably not handle anything that appeared to be a bootleg, and would certainly allow the bootlegger in question to be traced if enquiries had ever been made by the genuine copyright owner. McLaren has always publicly denied responsibility for Spunk, but has stated that he prefers the record to Never Mind the Bollocks.
Some Sex Pistols fans concur with McLaren – and producer Goodman – that the raw versions of the songs on Spunk are superior to the officially released ones, particularly since Spunk approximates a faithful reproduction of the original Sex Pistols line-up's live sound. The album also features the bass-lines of Glen Matlock, which were not reproduced when guitarist Steve Jones took over bass duties for the recording of Never Mind the Bollocks.
Spunk is therefore often cited as the Sex Pistols' de facto alternative debut album. Certainly a tape of part or all of Spunk had been played to Tony Parsons as early as March 1977, and became the subject of his NME article, "Blank Nuggets in the UK", which described the recordings as if they represented an imminent debut album release."
