Tool - Live at Maida Vale BBC 1993


I know the pictures are more recent than the recording (all you blog purists out there can kiss it...) but it is well-nigh impossible to find good pictures of them from that era. I remember all the cool promos I had for them that I gave away back in 1994, damn - a prettty woman can talk me out of damn near anything. Or at least they could back then, eh? Anyway, this little diamond here is a wonderful glimpse of the band before they became world-beaters. They so often remind me of Led Zeppelin and am glad they chose ot cover the Zep. Both bands had music with WEIGHT. The lyrics and the music are heavy, oops, HEAVY. I don't know how they sound like a 10 piece band but they pull it off. True virtuoso skill on every instrument, including Maynard and his voice. It's odd how music affects people in different ways, isn't it? When my wife was pregnant with our first son, we'd spend a lot of time at home relaxing and listneing to music. And DaddyRich, being who he is, generally has the run of the music selection. This would be 1996-1997 and for a long porton of that time I had Radiohead 'OK Computer' and Tool's 'Aenima' on steady rotation. Like clockwork, both of these deep and heavy classic albums would put her to sleep. I am not talking about soft levels of volume either, since appreciation of both albums increases exponentially with the rise of the volume. But, I digress. This is a quick little set (for Tool) and is as enjoyable today as it was lo those many years ago in Jolly Old England.

Genesis - The BBC Recordings 1970-1972



I am really glad that so many kind folks have encouraged DaddyRich to put up some of the classic Genesis rarities that are in my collection. Seeing and hearing their beginnings will really serve to make one weep to see what they became. But I guess it really all boils down to money in the music business, right? Oh wait, you say Peter Gabriel did his thing and never compromised and STILL made loads of cash? Interesting. Oddly enough, one of the better stories about their origin and break-up was on VH1 a few years ago and I highly recommend anyone watch it if it plays again. Enough of me and my recommendations, here is a great early BBC collection of the boys at their most experimental. Although I much prefer the 'Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' era Genesis, this stuff is too delciate and rare not to share with my great friends this time of year. This is just the beginning of these posts, more to come. Enjoy.
Yet another morning where I am in a hurry to Richie ready for school on time - last day before Christmas break for the little one's! Come on by today and hang out while DaddyRich plays the first disc of the Genesis Archive with the live performance of 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' while he cleans the house. It is a sight to see.

David Bowie - BBC Concerts UK 1969-1972


This is a tough one to find accurate information on, folks. I have had it for a few years but have never found it listed in Bowie's releases and bootlegs. It seems like it may have had something to do with the proposed (and ultimately, pulled from distribution) Bowie BBC 3 disc set that Bowie eventually released himself. The tracks do not match up and there is no interviews on this so who knows? One thing for sure - it's Bowie and it kicks ass. 14 tracks that include some of my all-time Bowie favorites like 'Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud', 'I'm Waiting For The Man' and 'Rock & Roll Suicide'. Hope you enjoy the disc and, as always, much more Bowie in the future.
