Led Zeppelin - Physical Rarities


Since there are so many dedicated Led Zeppelin blogs and sites that share boots and such, I don't often share what I have. I figure people can just go elsewhere if they want that. But, in my attempt at sharing my favorites, I invariably have been skipping over my massive (ahem) Led Zep collection. A Double-Shot Of Soul From Otis Redding






Otis Redding - Otis Redding Sings Soul (1966)


Another aptly-named album from the 1960's. What a corny title, eh? File next to "Bob Marley Sings Reggae". But to say that Otis "sings" soul is a bit of a misnomer. The man belted and wailed that sweet soul music. You could FEEL Otis, you know? It's a shame he didn;t live longer to give us more of his art, but we have quite a bit still here to enjoy. One of the best compilations I have heard of the man's music and I hope you all can dig it, too.

Otis Redding - In Person Live At The Whisky A Go Go (1966)


A more astute and well written description than I could have come up with...

"Recorded in 1966, Otis Redding's In Person At The Whisky A Go Go is his best live album, beating out Live in Europe, and is one of the best and most energetic live albums ever made. The album kicks off with the great I Can't Turn You Loose followed by Pain In My Heart, from Redding's first album. This is followed by the soulful plea of Just One More Day and a great version of his earlier hit Mr. Pitiful. The recording of Satisfaction on here is even better then the version on Otis Blue, and easily rivals the Stone's version. This is followed by three great soul songs, I'm Depending On You, Any Ole Way and the great ballad These Arms of Mine. Reddin then goes into a kickin' version of James Brown's Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, which at least as good as the original. The album closes with the classic Respect. This is just a tour de force performance and you can feel the energy coming off of it. This prooves just how great of a voice Otis Redding had and just how soulful he was. This is an essential album in Otis Redding's catalog and in the history of Soul and R&B."

The Clash - D.O.A. (Demos, Alternates and Outtakes)



If Rolling Stone magazine ever got one thing right, it was calling The Clash "The Only Band That Matters" way back in the day. I cannot truly describe the wonderful effect their music has had on the shaping of my mind in my youth. A punk rock band that wasn't afraid to , eloquently I may add, say what they meant. Sure, there was a lot of screamers back then with loads of rage and little vocabulary who had a message as well. But no one could match these boys for energy and vision. They made reggae, ska, skiffle, punk and so many other styles sound so sweet. So, of course, DaddyRich has loaded up on their rarities and gems - and will be posting a few here for other like-minded individuals. Although I already had this one for a while, all praise is due to AlienOnAcid and the mighty SFRP for hooking the world up to the kind stuff. Keep your eyes open here, kids - more to come!

The Beatles - Revolution (Bootleg)



One of my favorite Beatle collections of scraps and such. This is demos and incidental tracks from around 1965-1968, with some great quality sound, considering what I had been expecting. Early versions of 'We Can Work It Out', 'Julia' and an alternate 'Across The Universe', among other gems make it worth your while, for sure. Oh, so many more to come.... I just got the strangest feeling of deja vu wth this post. Did I already do this one? I checked my list and can't find it - maybe since I have been meaning to post this one for a while. Strange.

Parliament - Mothership Connection


Oh yes. Yes indeed. DaddyRich's first funk record and what a way to get started, huh? This music can move even zombies to get on the dance floor. I have yet to meet anyone immune to the Parliament/Funkadelic groove. Their particular brand of funk is most greaty realized here on this disc and althiugh there's no rarities, demos, etc. involved (except for the puzzling inclusion of the "bonus" track), this album is an integral part of any music fan's collection. Trust me on this and thank me later.

The Velvet Undergound - Bootleg Series Vol. 1 : The Quine Tapes

Since I have had some kind requests that have come in a timely fashion - basically things I was planning on uploading anyway - I will start a mini-spotlight on Lou Reed and Velvet Underground rarities at this here blog. Up first is the first 2 discs of the beloved Quine Tapes and more to follow....

"In the '80s, former Richard Hell guitarist Robert Quine hooked up with Lou Reed for a critically acclaimed batch of albums regarded by many as the Velvet Underground visionary's finest solo works. However, this was not the first time Quine and Reed's paths had crossed. In 1969, young Velvets fan Quine surreptitiously recorded a string of Velvet Underground gigs during what turned out to be some of the group's last great moments before slowly splintering apart the following year. Though Velvets fans have heard other live versions of much of this material, a great deal of what's heard on these three discs is illuminating, and some of it is downright revelatory. The often-overlooked sweet side of the band is shown in the wistful ballads "Sunday Morning" and "Femme Fatale" and the Mo Tucker vocal showcases "After Hours" and "I'm Sticking with you, but it's the rock & roll fury of the group that drives this collection. The minimalist-inspired guitar-drums-organ din of "Foggy Notion," I Can't Stand It," and "White Light/White Heat" is the very definition of carefully controlled chaos. Perhaps the biggest treats are the three wildly differing versions of the half-hour epic "Sister Ray." The thrilling, eclectic treatments of this tune show that the iconoclastic Velvets had more in common with the blues-rockers and first-generation jam bands of the time than latter-day revisionists would care to admit."

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life (Disc 1) (1976)

Could any more be said about the greatness of Stevie? The first disc of this album contains not one stinker. How many discs are thoroughly good, top to bottom? This one here folks. 'Love's In Need of Love Today', 'Village Ghettoland', 'Pastime Paradise' (damn Coolio butchered that track) and "Have A Talk With God' - these are all so good that it boggles the mind to belive that one (blind) man wrote these and played ALL the instruments on the songs. Not even mentioning the solid 'Sir Duke' that has the horn riff that I recall as one of my earliest memories (Dad was a hip music listener) and foremost 'Knocks Me Off My Feet' that always makes me think of Tasha. Spread the love y'all.
