Oh to be hearing a classic album by a genius in it's early stages. This is the stuff DaddyRich lives for....sigh. The sound quality on this collection is absolutely superb as well. Here are alternate versions and some rootsy dubs of jams all of us reggae-heads know so very well. Some of these songs saw the light of day in the early 1990's on 'Talking Blues' collection of tracks live from a KSAN show that stands as one of my all-time favorites still. Others are heard here and only available on this compendium of Rastafarian Rootsiness. Yum. Enjoy, my good friends, enjoy!

The Clash - The Vanilla Tapes (2 Disc set of early 'London Calling' tracks)

Been a while since DaddyRich was here to post and I do apologize for the delay. There was a bit of heat on at the time and I decided to lay back in the cut and wait it out. Hopefully the time is ripe again for the sharing of the jams. I, along with SO many of my friends, wish that recording equipment had advanced to it's present state a long time ago. That way many of the best bands would leave behind crystal-clear recording sessions and not the jumbled mess of clicks and tape hiss that we have all had to become adjusted to when we find a treasure from one of our favorite bands, like The Clash. I have very many rarities and demo collections from the seminal band that changed popular music forever, as well as the life of one Mr. DaddyRich....but I digress. This is one of the better sounding collections of early album tracks and unpolished versions of soon-to-be classic songs that graced the immortal 'London Calling'. And it has a wonderful back-story, to boot..... culled from Wikipedia.

"The Vanilla Tapes were demo tracks recorded by the English punk band The Clash -- in essence, an early version of their album London Calling (although the track Remote Control was a song from the band's first album). Roadie Johnny Green was to deliver the tapes to the band's new producer, Guy Stevens; Green fell asleep on the train ride to the studio. Waking up at the station where he was to disembark, he panicked, and in his rush left the tapes behind. After that, the tapes were considered lost until March 2004, when Clash guitarist Mick Jones was moving boxes and came upon a copy of the tape."

There is reported to be a 37 track completist edition of this floating around the world between some discerning (read as snooty and greedy) collectors and I continue my valiant search and will bring results here, of course. Wooooooooord. Ah yes, the mighty Steppin’ Razor himself - Peter Tosh. Demos from his landmark ‘Equal Rights’ album that still gets much rotation on DaddyRich Radio. This one is especially precious to me for it’s presence of ‘Babylon Queendom’, which ranks very high on my all-time Tosh recordings list. Hope you all enjoy as well.

Stone Temple Pilots - Unreleased and Outtakes

Anyone who is remotely near DaddyRich's age (ancient) can recall first hearing these fine fellows first when MTv started playing 'Sex-Type Thing' in heavy rotation way back when. I always liked and still do like that song but they seemed to me to fall in the cracks of what was then and now (sadly) called 'Grunge' (cringe). I am sure that a few people in and around San Diego saw some potential is the then-named Mighty Joe Young and their brilliantly talented rhythm section and freaky singer. But it wasn't until the release of 'Purple' that, to me, it seemed these cats had put it all together and I began my internal countdown that begins ticking when an immensely talented group with a freaky-talented singer comes to my notice. I gave them about 2 years before I figured they would break up and be done and not heard from, again until MTv decided to release a various artists kind of "remember-the-90's 2 disc set". I may have been off by a bit and gladly so, my friends. After dalliances with other bands, and having varying degrees of success they have decided to reunite and, oh, it truly feels so good. Doesn't it? Here for todays helping of goodness is a collection of outtakes and unreleased songs dating from the late 90's to their last studio offering and contains some worthy gems for your esteemed ears. To my (albeit limited) knowledge these slabs have not seen release, official or otherwise as a collection. As always, share this stuff folks and you know DaddyRich welcomes any friends offering wisdom on these cuts if they have it. We are willing to learn and credit will be given. Peace.

Back From The Dead!!!!!!!

I couldn't find any pictures of Ben Franklin as a zombie with which to illustrate my being back from the dead, so just try and picture it in your mind my friends. Wow. So many kind words from so many friends of the Ape lately. DaddyRich is certainly grateful and has plans to revive here, yet again. But we have run into the same old problem as I (and SO many others) have before. Mass deletions. Some unsavory character has reported over 150 of my latest links and some I had yet to post here, even. So I will lay low and lurk about a bit until the coast is clear. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Demos

Oh, Peter Gabrie-era Genesis. Just the thought makes me wish I had been born earlier. It's a shame that he's too much of a sacred cow (no insult intended) to stoop to tour with them on this reunion thing they got going. I have read his reasons and can totally understand, but nonetheless it prevented me from buying a ticket. They would have had at least $200-$300 of my money if he had come for the ride. I really have no use for the Phil Collins hits or to hear him sing Gabriel's songs. Not knocking anyone's music tastes - just showing off my idiotic reasoning for this. Enough of that, these demos are from my favorite Genesis album of all. Such epic proportions and depth of emotion that must have launched them miles ahead of their peers upon it's initial release. Can't pick any one favorite from the whole but hearing the songs in embryonic form and even instrumental takes is a pleasure to my old ears. Hope one or two of you kiddies enjoy it to.

Prince & The Revolution - 1999 Revisited (2 Discs) April 2, 1983

Aw yes. How many of us remember 1983? Damn, I was in 7th grade and probably 4'6" and 160 pounds of sweaty young man. Oh, the humanity. Akward times, for sure - but DaddyRich was already feeling Prince and the funk he brought to the radio when it so desperately needed it. This was also right about the time I gave up on commercial radio as I finally got a hint of what college radio was doing. So, insted of waiting all day for one of the big stations to play a song I liked, all I would do is tune into the right station at the right time and Bam! all the best music without obnoxious commercials. It was there I discovered disc jockeys who played nothing but hip-hop or funk for hours at a time! Imagine that. And I have never looked back. But I digress, this offering from the Purple Person is that rare treat - a full concert complimented with a rehearsal from the same tour. Long time friends of the Ape will recall my feeling for the music of Prince and will listen accordingly and undeniably be overjoyed. Some of my favorites from this era of the man are included in all ther live glory (the man plays a meeeeean guitar) - 'Controversy', '1999' and 'Dirty Mind' Woohoo! Takes me back to those heady days of bygone times. Hope you all enjoy.

Eric B. and Rakim - 12" Collection

Oh yes. The President and The "R". What a time for hip-hop it was for all of us heads when these vinyl slabs were unleashed upon the unsuspecting masses. Everything changed. Musical knowledge, the understated rhythm scratch and rhymes with brains and heart were suddenly what we expected from our music. And, except for the music from these Queens geniuses we would be often disappointed by what was to become of our thing. There were no flashy 'transformer' scratches and the musical montage was thick with old-school breaks and a deft hand from Eric Barrier to keep this conscious party rocking. My feeble words cannot encompass what Rakim did to the scene. At the time he rolled up on the scene, it was all about rhymes name-dropping your sneakers, cars and how many women you have. No one else was thinking about the eternal, the ethereal and how real b-boys should conduct themselves. What a blueprint they provided and it makes me even more ashamed when I listen to them and then see what passes for this music (it's no longer 'mine' sadly) these days. Truly sad. But let's all take a trip back to the mid-to late 1980's and early '90's for some of the best rap records ever released. Respect.

Please don't allow DaddyRich to get all gushy about how much love he has for Mr. Jim Croce. Man, this cat was awesome. And taken from us all far too soon. I do truly wish there were more available from his canon, but this appears to be the clearing out of his vaults. Nine Inch Nails - Purest Feeling (Pretty Hate Machine Demos)

The one and only Trent Reznor. One of my favorite albums of all time is, of course, 'Pretty Hate Machine' and you can imagine my delight at finding these years ago. These are especially precious, to my mind, because of the pre-heavy heavy angst N.I.N absent here, that came to full fruition in the aforementioned album. Some of these are markedly different from the finished versions (as they should be) but, to my mind, hint at a more pop sensibility. Let's not underestimate the influence of the music of Ministry, who also started with a poppier sound and after a little soul-searching had found their dark niche, as it were. It all comes full circle when you hear the early music of Mr. Reznor and how danceable it was. I say this not as a slight towards any of his music, past or present. I just love the evolution and am grateful to be able to hear these songs in their gestational stages. I have a few more N.I.N. goodies that will be posted shortly. So , I hope you all enjoy these songs.

The Million Dollar Quartet at Sun Studios - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis December 4, 1956

Oh, I am well aware that this offering can be had on a number of blogs but I felt compelled to include it here anyway. I love this one and just recently revisited it a little while back. There must have been a full moon or a unique alignment in the heavens on this particular winter evening in Memphis (hmmmmm....celestial alignment...Memphis...Egypt?...I must consult further..) to put these incredible young men together in the cramped confines of Sam Phillips' rinky-dinky hillbilly studio. Whatever caused them to combine for an evening of song and laughter, we all can be grateful that it happened and the ever-sharp business acumen of Phillips for calling the local paper's entertainment editor to capture the moment. Although there is so many fragments of songs and not much complete, I believe it can still be listened to and enjoyed for it's ability to crystalize a moment in American history, as so few of it's like have been properly captured for us to appreciate. "The jam session seems to have happened by pure chance. Perkins, who by this time had already met success with "Blue Suede Shoes", had come into the studios that day, accompanied by his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland, their aim being to cut some new material, including a revamped version of an old blues song, "Matchbox". Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, who wished to try to fatten this sparse rockabilly instrumentation, had brought in his latest acquisition, singer and piano man extraordinaire, Jerry Lee Lewis, still unknown outside Memphis, to play the piano on the Perkins session.
Sometime in the early afternoon, Elvis Presley, a former SUN artist himself, but now at RCA, dropped in to pay a casual visit accompanied by a girlfriend, Marilyn Evans. He was, at the time, the biggest name in show business, having hit the top of the singles charts five times, and topping the album charts twice in the preceding 12 month period. Less than four months earlier, he had appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, pulling an unheard-of 83% of the television audience, which was estimated at 55 million, the largest in history, up to that time. After chatting with Philips in the control room, Presley listened to the playback of the Perkins’ session, which he pronounced to be good. Then he went into the studio and some time later the jam session began. Phillips left the tapes running in order to "capture the moment" as a souvenir and for posterity. At some point during the session, SUN artist Johnny Cash, who had also enjoyed a few hits on the country charts, popped in. (Cash noted in his autobiography Cash that it was he who was the first to arrive at Sun Studio that day.)
As the session continued, Phillips spotted an opportunity for some publicity and called a local newspaper, the Memphis Press-Scimitar. Bob Johnson, the newspaper’s entertainment editor came over to the studios accompanied by a UPI representative named Leo Soroca, and a photographer.
The following day, an article, written by Johnson about the session, was published in the Memphis Press-Scimitar under the title, "Million Dollar Quartet". The article contained the now well known photograph of Elvis Presley seated at the piano surrounded by Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash."

Elvis Presley - G.I. Blues Collectors Edition

I believe I have already given my opinion on Elvis here, right? Well, to summarize - I appreciate him more as a cultural milestone than as a singer (he wasn't much of a musician), but I do not wish to slight those who may be great fans of his. We may just have to agree to disagree. I DO believe the burgeoning rock and roll movement took a swift kick in the nuts as soon as he was drafted into service for the Army and sent to Germany. If not for Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins and a few others, it may have extinguished altogether before reaching it's fruition. So, for me, this is one of the more bearable Elvis offerings and is offered as an answer to a request. Please understand that I do read all of the e-mails and comments and would love to fill all the requests and such but I have a backlog of about 200 requests and will get to them as my time allows. I hope htere are some fans out there who do not already have this one and it pleases their ears. Peace.

The Stooges - Studio Sessions 1972

As is often the case, I find a wonderful description on the web that trumps anything I could write. I recently rewatched "Velvet Goldmine" and continue to be impressed with Ewan MacGregor's Iggy imperesonation. Really uncanny stuff. Lots of goodness and Stooges' madness in this bootleg for you all to enjoy. The review below is from www.dmme.net/reviews/reviews5.html - they are a great resource for kicking musical knowledge.

"THE STOOGES are the band everyone has to re-visit from time to time to recall they were not only about noise. Iggy seems to overshadow hus mates while it was them who secured for the singer a space to freak out in. These recordings hail from 1972, around the "Raw Power" period and after it, when the band set to work on the follow-up. Welcomed in the fold was Scott Thurston whose Jerry Lee Lewis-ey piano shines in "Head On" and no one can ignore Ron Asheton's bass. Hectic rock'n'roll debuted on the "Metallic KO" live album but this version shows how unleashed the band was even in the studio. "Death Trip" is presented here in rough mix, not so wild as one that made the LP. Pop in his best Jagger mood.

"I Got Right", fantastic, organ-driven song eventually appeared in 1975 on Pop's album of the same name. Early variant could have been considered classic had it been released by the band. Kudos to the short solo Blackmore would've been proud of.

Detroit's WABX radio broadcast 1972 sessions and now fans can savour "Hard To Beat" and still poppy "Raw Power" taken off the station's vaults. In case you don't know: "Hard To Beat", once polished and loaded with fiery guitars, turned out as "Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell".

Another rock'n'roll of this kind is "Cock In My Pocket", previously known only by the "Metallic KO" rendition. But studio version appeared to exist with keyboards' firework provided by one Bob Sheff while . Also there are two jams, "Rubber Legs" and "Pin Point Eyes", dedicating the listener to THE STOOGES methods of work, tight and disciplined despite the rumours. Especially good is the latter, the blues, while James Williamson's solo of the former blows the socks off the feet.

Manzarek-like organ adorns mighty "Open Up & Bleed" which you could easily confuse with stoned Mick The Stone track. And more DOORS feel to "Johanna" to pop up later on Iggy's "Kill City".

A valuable addition to THE STOOGES' catalogue, a fun not only for a fan."

The Beatles - The River Rhine Tapes

Great selections from the 'Let It Be' and 'Get Back' sessions-era. Not a whole lot of Beatle-banter on this one, many boots of this era have endless studio chatter and clearly show the band falling apart. Although I value those editions as well, it gets kind of depressing to listen to. This one is just chock full of great versions of soon-to-be classics, God they are missed. The best part of this package it seems universally agreed upon is the emergence of George Harrison as a song-writig force to be reckoned with. This one (actually is part of a 3 disc set) has some wonderful sound quality and is worth many listens on your stereos children, more Beatles to come.

The Beatles - Sink in the Can

Some more Beatle goodness from the 1968-69 era of the band. Near the inevitable end that was soon to pass. This time frame for the band is among my favorites (hard to beleive they were only around for about 6-7 years on the scene) and is rich with outtake material. Doesn't hurt either that 'Abbey Road' is my second favorite album of theirs - anyone guess the first? Crass - Peel Session March 10, 1979

Oh yes. Love Crass. To me, they seemed like the English equivalent of our Dead Kennedys. Keen political insight and minimal amounts of musical talent. The words are what were really meant to be heard and absorbed. I suppose they figure it may be easier to change minds (and eventually, the world) by wonderfully voiced and well-written words than by their guitars, drums, bass, et. al. Sadly, Crass only did one session with the immortal Mr. Peel (God rest his soul) and here we have the fruits of that session. Damn, 1979 was a great year for the Peel Sessons, eh? Gang of Four (love them, too), Joy Division, Adam & The Ants, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Buzzcocks, U.K. Subs, O.M.D., The Police, Psychedelic Furs, Madness, Stiff Little Fingers, XTC, The Specials, Killing Joke, The Damned... Would it be too much to ask to be reincarnated as John Peel circa 1979. Holy Hell - that reads like my dream line-up of English Bands. For you further edification, I will be posting more Crass in the future and hope you will indeed enjoy their music and go buy some from their own label. At least you know where the money is going when you buy from Crass Records. I will go buy another just to do my part, as well.

Tool - Live at Maida Vale BBC 1993

I know the pictures are more recent than the recording (all you blog purists out there can kiss it...) but it is well-nigh impossible to find good pictures of them from that era. I remember all the cool promos I had for them that I gave away back in 1994, damn - a prettty woman can talk me out of damn near anything. Or at least they could back then, eh? Anyway, this little diamond here is a wonderful glimpse of the band before they became world-beaters. They so often remind me of Led Zeppelin and am glad they chose ot cover the Zep. Both bands had music with WEIGHT. The lyrics and the music are heavy, oops, HEAVY. I don't know how they sound like a 10 piece band but they pull it off. True virtuoso skill on every instrument, including Maynard and his voice. It's odd how music affects people in different ways, isn't it? When my wife was pregnant with our first son, we'd spend a lot of time at home relaxing and listneing to music. And DaddyRich, being who he is, generally has the run of the music selection. This would be 1996-1997 and for a long porton of that time I had Radiohead 'OK Computer' and Tool's 'Aenima' on steady rotation. Like clockwork, both of these deep and heavy classic albums would put her to sleep. I am not talking about soft levels of volume either, since appreciation of both albums increases exponentially with the rise of the volume. But, I digress. This is a quick little set (for Tool) and is as enjoyable today as it was lo those many years ago in Jolly Old England.

Various Artists - Boss Reggae! Coxsone Dodd Selections

Whoa Nelly! What a great collection of the Rootsiest of the Reggae, from the golden age of the music. Containing selections from some of DaddyRich's favorites like The Gladiators and Winston Jarrett. Coxsone Dodd, for those who don't know, was one of THE pre-eminent producers of his day and worked with a who's who list of reggae stars. We all know that I post many dub collection shere, but my true love of reggae lies in the Roots tradition. Bob Dylan - The Emmit Grogan Acetates (1963)

Oh, the awesome early Dylan. Just love this stuff and, knowing my penchant for all things rare and unusual in great music, sometimes even just an added second of studio chatter is enough to make a boot worthwhile to me. I know, I am a freak. Just ask the wife. Although this dates as 1963, it seems these recordings were also dated from 1964-65, so who knows? Things get murky sometimes in the wild and wooly world of acetates. I will also begin again to post some more outtakes and rarities from Mr. Zimmerman as soon as I can get them uploaded and have some pithy comments prepared for your edification and approbation.

"Seven tracks from the Emmett Grogan acetates in superb stereo so clean there's little hint that acetates are the source. Bonus tracks also in excellent quality, to my knowledge best quality available. The Another Side acetates are sure to cause a stir. While these trax are the same as appear on the official album, in a couple of cases you hear the producer asking Dylan if he's ready and perhaps a count-in. All, that is, except "Mr Tambourine Man." This version is completely different, vocally and instrumentally, than the one recorded 6 months later and released on Bringing It All Back Home. This is a major find. Unlike the upbeat, optimistic, jaunty official version, this one is much slower, more sparse, sung like BD has the "worried blues," concerned that his muse may not return. A totally different song, different phrasing, added lines, a mistaken line, different ending. And who is that singing the choruses with Bob? [Jack Elliott] This version runs well over a minute longer than the released version, and ends without a guitar/harp solo. This one tune is more than worth the price of admission. "

The Cure - What Happened Behind The Door?

You know, it seems that every month I smack myself upside my head and exclaim, "how could I have not posted more (or any) of THIS band (insert name of any 1000 bands)". So, here I am again wondering how a band I love as much as The Cure has not made it's prescence felt more strongly on the Ape. And there is no good excuse, ladies and gentlemen. I shall begin to rectify that starting today. I have about 100 bootleg/rarities and thanks to the mighty SFRP , they keep coming. It seems kind of redundant to post so many individual boots , what with 'JoinThe Dots' being available and all, but I digress. I may even eventually post that. Wonderful disc set that is, just great. This wonderful collection is composed of early alternate takes for most of the disc and ends on a few cuts available on the classic acoustic disc. I may just have to put in that acoustic disc now for a listen, it's been too long. Hope you all enjoy.

Depeche Mode - Demo's and Rarities Collection

Talk about your difficult tasks, my friends. Whew. I have been a DM fan for quite a few years now (Daddy IS an old man), and given my penchant for all that is demo-like and alternate, etc. you can imagine my zeal in seeking their rarities. Sure, they have their respective 'Ultra Rare Trax' compilations that have been floating around the intewebs for a few years. But these seem to be merely compilations of the less-desirable club mixes that never really did much for me. Daddy loves the demos. The process of a song from a few scattered chords or melodies into a full-grown song is akin to magic to me. Can't really explain it any better than that, my friends. Sadly, so many artists are ashamed of their first forays into songs that later become well-known that the demos are just buried and forgotten. Some have other reasons I am sure, but this seems to be the gist of the situation. Of course, artists are beginning now to see the light on this topic and many new deluxe editions of classic albums are being released with a bonus disc or simply bonus tracks and many of them are demos and alternate takes. Also, conversely, the artists could be having no input on this and the greedy record companies saw a new way to re-package old product and expand it to 2 discs and charge more cash for the product. Reminds me of Morrissey's song 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' . Truly these are the only items that get me to walk into record stores now and I am loving them. So, here is one I have found that actually has Martin Gore's home demos and others goodies as well , I do hope you enjoy them and turn a brother onto any website or sharing place that has more of this sort of Depeche Mode goodness that you may know of. Willie Nelson & Leon Russell Live in New Jersey 1979

Oh, the joy. It's Willie again, kids. This is the tour he did with Leon Russell that produced the timeless gem 'One For The Road' in 1979. Oh, if only I wasn't a snot-nosed 8 year-old then...sigh. Anyway, this album bears some resemblence to the former but is from the New Jersey show on that tour and broadcast on FM radio in New York WNAW. So, there is the inevitable station identification breaks which are not so bad that they truly interrupt the groove you get into on this one. I ahd to wait until 2006 to finally see Willie live in concert and cannot recommend enough the voice, talent, legend and all the good qualities that he has. A living legend indeed. Every time I listen to the 'Red Headed Stranger' album, my esteem only increases for his gifts. But, I digress. So, please sit back and enjoy the show. I am right now.

Depeche Mode - Black Celebration Deluxe Edition Bonus DVD (live Tracks)

No, I didn't post the whole shebang on this one, sorry. I am trying to not to draw as much attention to myself as in the past. This post will only contain the bonus DVD tracks from the awesome Deluxe Package of one of their greatest albums. Mainly because of the dearth of decent sounding live shows of this era from the band, I always love to hear anything resembling a soundboard live show. I may even put some of the better-sounding bootlegs up here if anyone is interested. Always a great show from these fellows. So everyone put on black clothes and your Dr. Martens and alooowly sway back and forth, whilst chanting. "Let's have a Blaaaaaaaack Celllllabratioooooon tooooooonight." Hank Williams Sr. & The Drifting Cowboys (and others) - The Health and Happiness Shows

Here is a gem indeed for all the serious lovers of Hank (like DaddyRich) and will keep toes tapping for a while. I had searched the internets for a long time years back, piecing these together ever so slowly and laboriously. Years people. Years. All I had to show for my efforts was a scattered few remnants of what seemed to my ears to be the Halcyon days of country music. Then, Lo and Behold, they get an official release with better sound quality. We all win on this one. Some of the best songs in his wide catalogue are played here live and to great effect - tunes like 'Lovesick Blues', 'Lost Highway' and 'Mind Your Own Business'. More Hank on the way, regardless of how few download this one. I will keep shoving Hank at you and it will sink in to a few, and that's enough for me. Just do what you can to avoid the songs that his wife sings on.... (cringe). Boy, he really must have loved her to let her keep singing with that voice of hers. Damn. More music to come - 'if the Lord's willing and the creek don't rise'.

As an odd side-note. The only 2 times my Hank Sr. t-shirt has been recognized in 7 years is at a Willie Nelson sjow and a Social Distortion concert. Interesting, huh?

Talking Heads - Demos 1975

Any regular reader of the Ape will know that DaddyRich is the first to admit how unhip and late-to-the-party he is on some music. Many years I ignored Talking Heads for no good reason other than that after a few minutes of listening, it didn't grab me. With as much music as I have, if it don't grab me quickly - I got a stack of more waiting that just might. And said album goes into a pile for 'later listening' and with the advent of the sharing communities, my 'later' stack is usually a few hundred albums deep. Oh, the ebarrassment of riches over here. Love the music too much. So, many years after the fact of their splitting up and solo permutations, I begin to give their early work a listen. So, I am an old fool who arrives late - but at least I show up, no? Great early stuff with glimpses of greatness. And this girl has done more work on this demo collection than anyone I have seen - she has the same music disease I have...kudos for her hard work.

Culture - Rare & Unreleased Dub

First off, a moment to reflect and give thanks for the life of Joseph Hill and the wonderful voice he shared with the world. Respect. As a fan of the Dub and reggae lover this is an invaluabe collection of the sweet harmonies of the immortal Culture sound. It all began for me way back witha listen to 'International Herb' and my ears were hooked. A searing social conscience and a fun side as well, this group had many parts. Any fan of reggae will be pleased and well sedated upon listening to this crucial collection of the good stuff . DaddyRIch has a couple particular favorites - "Two Sevens Clash Dub" (from one of the greatest albums ever recorded) and "Iron Sharp Dub" are worth repeated listening. Have fun and share. Bob Dylan - Acoustic Thunder

We all know how much DaddyRich loves the acoustic performance. The wife and I just picked up the instrument ourselves and are having a great time killing some notes and strangling others. As much as I enjoy hearing other great artists do their thing 'au naturel' (as it were) Bob Dylan doing so is just sublime. It's the way he was always meant to be head, in my humble estimation. And yes, I do love the Royal Albert Hal gigs but, to my mind, his greatest strength lies in being heard in that softly spoken voice that can sometimes rise to a roar. I so regret not giving his music a chance when I was much younger, since it has enriched my life so much since that first night I said to myself (in a smoke-filled room) "This damn Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 has been in the family record collection for so long, what is it about this guy? I hear the songs are supposed to have great content, but his voice is annoying... blah, blah, blah" And after only one serious listen it became so evident to me that ONLY Bob could sing these songs and do it that way. Immediately his voice and lyrical beauty smacked me into consciousness. Thereafter he became part of my Holy Bob Trinity (time-lines be damned!) of Bob Marley and Bob Mould. These performances are amazing and after you can listen past the sound quality available for 1975-1976 bootlegs, great thing are to be found for waiting ears.

Green Day - Dookie Demos

Let the naysayers have their way with this one. I still like Green Day and have done so for a long time. And, in DaddyRich's humble opinion (if I may opine...) this was a watershed album for popular music. One of the rare occurences when something from the underground is just too good to be kept subterranean. Glimpses of greatness were easy to see on earlier efforts like 1,039 Soothed Out Slappy Hours (and the individual early releases that comprised the collection) and Kerplunk!, all the Lookout! Records releases. Also, an astoishing number of lonely young boy and girl-that-got-away love songs, which were theretofore a rarity in So. Cal punk to that point. But the three-piece kept working and touring constantly and became a force to be reckoned with on the road and in the studio. All the "punk purists" (a.k.a. broke musicians who wish others to remain broke and anonymous as well) had their field day on the clean production by an industry fellow, but the end result shows the band to be far and away the best of their contemporaries. Well, maybe Rancid is better - but Green Day is far more accessible.

Well, looky here!

Yes, I am back from my sabbatical. Much time has been spent pondering and pondering (and watching too much Pinky & The Brain, apparently) on the future of the blog. My sincerest thanks go to the many hundreds of people who have commented and sent e-mails through my profile link here. The love is overwhelming and my response is that I am about set to get back in the ring and give it another go. I will do my level best to only put unreleased/bootleg stuff here (even tho the RIAA bitched about that, too.) but sometimes there is something just that just must be heard before purchase and I will remain that place for you kind people. As always my deepest gratitiude goes out to the mighty SFRP and all the Mokeys out there for sharing and being the best communities online. I would like to say that I am tanned, rested and ready. But the people who know me know that I am at least rested, if nothing else. Links will have some protection, so don't be put off by having to do a little dance and wait for 10 seconds for the download page to load, we all have to nowadays. And so it goes...

My good friends it is with a heavy heart and tired mind that I write this. The deletions due to trolls are continuing and now I have received several threatening legal notices (for unreleased material) that are forcing me to close up shop. How do the other guys get away with sharing for longer than this? All of your kind words and support are greatly appreciated on this end. It's a tough one-man operation to keep up for long so I am glad that I made it this far. But I have a family and cannot fight the system on this if they decide to hound me and so I lay down my sword , before I am hoist upon it. In the future (when all is well...) I will be looking toward a more community-oriented organization (much like one's I have mentioned previously) and should something new turn up I hope you all will keep your blogger accounts open so I can notify you. Again, many thanks for the good words and sharing. So, please get them all while you can and enjoy. For me, it's time to devote more time to study and scholarship. Like I once said , "The greatest sevice we can do for the deity is help our fellow man."

A message from DaddyRich

I was really hoping to share music here for one year and see how I still felt about it at the time and decide whether or not to continue. My e-mail and comments have been increasingly filled by trolls and their vague threats. As of yesterday, I have lost more than 250 albums that I uploaded and have shared with my friends here. Thats's over 100,000 unique downloads lost because someone has a hard-on for the RIAA. Maybe I should just take a hint. I anticipate more being lost tomorrow the way this whole thing seems to be heading. I will let this die down and return to the good fight here in a little while, but my enthusiasm has waned, as you could imagine. As always, I will be found lurking and sharing on the best boards and will always read messages from those I recognize, but I am done with 'Anonymous' people.

Growing up in the late 70's and 80's as I did, my first exposure to anything New York Dolls-Related was David Johansen as Buster Poindexter. Firehose/Minutemen Continued

With all due respect to the turd who wrote me to stick to outtakes and demos, I feel these bands need to be heard from and not much exists in the way of their rarities. I am hoping a few of you will go scour some used record stores and find yourselves some copies of these goodies at a less exorbitant amount than stores usually charge (and which artists see about 15 cents of...). Beginning with 'fromohio' , which shines with tracks like Mike Watt raging full on in 'What Gets Heard', interesting sounds from songs like 'Understanding' and you gotta love 'Riddle of the 80's'. If you enjoy yourself a dose of great Hurley and Watt sounds than you will not be disappointed.

This one was not treated too fairly upon arrival but has since been given the stamp of approval from everyone who's opinion I respect. The lovely "cooler-than-thou, I-was-there-way-back-when" eliticism that just kills punk rock was prevalent then with nearly all saying that it couldn't compare to the Minutemen and their glory days. Whatever, no shortage of dumbasses in the music press and music world in general. Especially awesome are 'Number 7' and 'Hell-Hole', although it's all worth the listen. Enjoy children!

I would like to know how your giving away entire albums free is supporting said musicians. Seems like you're actually taking money away from them.
If someone can download a free album they are not going to go out and buy it. There goes the artist's income..
Musicians have spent a lot of money getting this stuff down and out to the public, and people like you, "Daddy", feel somehow righteous in giving it away for nothing.
Maybe if you worship George Clinton so much, you could send a him a cheque every so often. At least let him know that you have taken it upon yourself to distribute his music like a free pamphlet. See what he says about it.
If an artist chooses to give away some of their music, that's THEIR right and their right only. Not yours. Let the public go out and buy the good stuff.
Is it any wonder the "good ones" are the poor ones?
You ain't helping the situation any.
Stick to the out-take albums and leave the available released albums alone, so musicians can actually get supported a little. "

The Stone Roses - Garage Flower (Demos)

We all know how DaddyRich gets when speaking about the Stone Roses and what they could have become....sigh. So I will be brief before I become overcome with emotion. I am the happy owner of many of their albums and bootlegs and this is an essential part of any collection, in my estimation. I always enjoy hearing the beginnings of a great band and spotting parts where the genius truly shines through and it's evident in so many spots here. Also, as previously stated - I do have many bootlegs and have a question for any of the other Roses fans out there: Do they all sound so crappy? Are any of them soundboard recordings that are worth the while? I don't even listen to mine after first getting them, they sound so horrid. I would love a truly great-sounding show (a la The Smths 'Rank') that I could suitably overplay and adore. Let an old man know...

"In the wake of The Stone Roses success in 1989/1990, the market was flooded with bootlegs proclaiming to be their 'lost' debut album. In fact, they were lifted from demo tapes that had circulated around Manchester between 1985 and 1988.

Musically these early sessions were generally quite rough - although there were some fascinating works-in-progress and numerous songs which never saw the light of day. Most stemmed from the Stone Roses' first proper stint in the studio. This album's worth of material was taped after the group signed to Thin Line Records in 1985, a label created by their then manager Howard Jones. Thin Line drafted in the city's leading producer Martin Hannett, to oversee the sessions at the local Strawberry Studios. But the band and label famously fell out and the sole product of Hannett's work with the band was the debut single, "So Young/Tell Me".

In 1996 Garage Flower Records issued the majority of the Hannett sessions under the title of "Garage Flower". Rumours suggested that Silvertone had inherited these tapes (they were published by Zomba, Silvertone's parent company) and decided to issue them in the wake of the court case and the band's acrimonious departure to Geffen in 1992.

Dismissed by the Stone Roses as nothing more than a bootleg, the release is still a vital piece in the band's early history.

The Garage Flower release finally saw the majority of the Roses demos and out-takes see the light of day but there is still a few rarities to be issued commercially."

Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust 12" Single

Just a little goody thrown in here for all you good children. One can never tire of either Mr. Bowie or Bauhaus, right? Of course I am right. Daddy is always right. This cover of the classic Bowie song was so well-crafted that my wife, a life-long Bowie fan but not alternative music-minded (go figure) didn't even know that it wasn't him. She has since learned to loathe Bauhaus, and about 99.9% of everything else I love to listen to. It's a good thing our love is stronger than conflicting musical tastes, eh? Only 3 songs on here so it's a quick listen, but eminently enjoyable. Also, only the nerdiest of us Bowie fanatics will get the allusion on the cover, but I do love it.

Devo - Live! (1980)

Been a while since any Devo was posted and this one is a good one. I haven't quite been able to figure out if this is part of the "Live! 1980" DVD concert yet. Once I get it, I will be able to tell you for sure, it sure does seem like half a show, but great nonetheless. Absolutley at the top of their form (not to take anything away from their recent gigs) they rip through some classics here that will have any child of the 1980's become lost in reminiscence. Johnny Cash - Murder

A great compilation of classic Cash bad-guy songs. I have been ignoring my Johnny Cash collection as of late and hope to remedy this in the coming months.

"The legendary Johnny Cash experienced something of a renaissance in the 1990s, fanned by a trilogy of theme collections of his past work: LOVE, GOD, and MURDER. In MURDER he explores the dark side of humanity, singing of those who, because of love, greed, anger or circumstance, commit that most irrevocable deed. Cash doesn't romanticize crime and criminals; he simply sings about their lives and stories. Nor does he moralize. Cash becomes the conduit for pieces of sad and unfortunate history. "Mister Garfield" recounts a Presidential assassination, while Bruce Springsteen's "Highway Patrolman" is a disquieting tale of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. Trashcan Sinatras - Live at The Casbah in San Diego May 14, 2005

We already know of DaddyRich's craziness for the Trashcans, so no more elaboration is needed. Most bands on blogs I couldn't give a toss about them and thier royalty rates, blah blah blah. These guys, though..... much different story. Some of the most amazing and enjoyable music I have ever heard came from this band and I never cease to do what I can to support and promote them. They genuinely deserve all the good that comes their way in my humble opinion. This wonderful set of songs, performed just down the road a bit in beautiful, sunny San Diego (DaddyRich wil be out there in July (Again) for Comic-Con!!!) is another stellar performance. Because the quality of talent and performance are so high, every show is like a greatest-hits tour. Enough of my ramblings... listen and love. Then - go buy their stuff. I have bought many of their items and encourage all to do the same. Listen close for DaddyRich's favorites like 'How Can I Apply...?' and 'Obscurity Knocks'.

Marvin Gaye - A Tribute To The Great Nat 'King' Cole

What discerning fan of great music could look at a title like that and not stop to listen to the music? Two of the shining lights of modern song, and bright stars in DaddyRich's firmament, I just had to give it a whirl. It's Nat's songs covered by Marvin, and although I usually feel like the classics should almost never be messed with... it IS Marvin, after all. Somehow this one got buried in the mid 1960's without much notice, but we know all about music critics, don't we? This exampe of early Marvin isn't what fans of his later output might rally dig but let's not be too concerned about them. This was well before 'What's Going On' and 'Sexual Healing', Marvin was much more fo a crooner in these times. Either way, I love Nat and believe no one but Marvin should attempt something like this and he succeeded beatifully.

David Bowie - Vampires Of Human Flesh (Scary Monsters Outtakes)

Yet another Bowie, for my good friends here. This particular gem is one the rarest of beasts - a great sounding outtakes session of late 70's David Bowie. If you wanted I could innundate you with some crap-sounding sessions but my standards prevent me from doing so. And of course, the search is always ongoing for great sounding sessions from the man. So, I continue to dig deep into the Bowie archives and plan on seeding a few throughout our time here together. Hope you all enjoy and keep your eyes and ears open for much more. Husker Du - Everything Falls Apart & More

What a great collection of the first album and the scarce singles from it. You already know of my love and respect for the great Bob Mould (buy hs music, he's one of the good guys. I do.)

"I really like the concept behind this release. Rhino took the Huskers first studio LP, 1982's Everything Falls Apart (tracks 1-12) and appended all of the impossible to find early singles and demos from their pre-SST years. The seasoned Husker Du scholar will see this as the most critical instrument for understanding the band's stunning musical transitions that occurred over their eight years together. No other recording offers such insight into the future sounds of this most innovative band. The uninitiated will be confused and dumbfounded by all of this "noise." But it's not the case that this recording is only applicable to a historical analysis. The songs themselves lit my world afire when I first heard them and they still do to this day. Some of the tracks are decidedly noisy, fast, chaotic punk similar to Land Speed Record, only not so damaging to the ears. Several selections offer a fantastic glimpse into the future of this band, most notably "Everything Falls Apart," "In a Free Land" and "Amusement." With a little hindsight the listener can see how in 1982 the coming of 1985's devastating New Day Rising was inevitable. Trying to describe Bob Mould's guitar and vocal brilliance serves no purpose-anyone that has ever heard him knows the depths of his gifted abilities. His playing is simply beyond description. Greg Norton's more active role as a songwriter in this period is shown here, and one must wonder how the band's sound would have progressed if he had maintained that status. I was never a grand supporter of Grant Hart, but his songs also stand out here, most notably the extended version of "Statues." As the early Reflex and New Alliance singles are nearly impossible to find, it's nice that Rhino made them accessible, along with the previously unreleased demos as well. Verdict: If the Huskers altered your world like they altered mine, you need this. Else, you just won't get it."

Death Row Records Rarities

Now, first and foremost I have to thank the heads over at Concainblunts for this one. As big a fan as I am of old-school rap music, this is a rare exception for something post-1989. Some very good times were had whilst listening to some of these tracks. Also, as much as Dr. Dre works on the nerves, he has a love for the Funkadelic sound that exonerates him of all my hating. It's all too easy to blame these fellows here (pictured below) for what became (has become) of todays popular rap music, namely that it sucks ass. But I believe the true fault (as usual) lies with the imitators and not the originators. Of course they spawned a industy full of studio gangsters and a respect for all things vile, but these cats did it with style. Of course, I will remove these in a flash if I hear that Suge Knight wants to come to my house and ask me to remove the tracks.

Another aptly-named album from the 1960's. What a corny title, eh? File next to "Bob Marley Sings Reggae". But to say that Otis "sings" soul is a bit of a misnomer. The man belted and wailed that sweet soul music. You could FEEL Otis, you know? It's a shame he didn;t live longer to give us more of his art, but we have quite a bit still here to enjoy. One of the best compilations I have heard of the man's music and I hope you all can dig it, too.

Otis Redding - In Person Live At The Whisky A Go Go (1966)

A more astute and well written description than I could have come up with...

"Recorded in 1966, Otis Redding's In Person At The Whisky A Go Go is his best live album, beating out Live in Europe, and is one of the best and most energetic live albums ever made. The album kicks off with the great I Can't Turn You Loose followed by Pain In My Heart, from Redding's first album. This is followed by the soulful plea of Just One More Day and a great version of his earlier hit Mr. Pitiful. The recording of Satisfaction on here is even better then the version on Otis Blue, and easily rivals the Stone's version. This is followed by three great soul songs, I'm Depending On You, Any Ole Way and the great ballad These Arms of Mine. Reddin then goes into a kickin' version of James Brown's Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, which at least as good as the original. The album closes with the classic Respect. This is just a tour de force performance and you can feel the energy coming off of it. This prooves just how great of a voice Otis Redding had and just how soulful he was. This is an essential album in Otis Redding's catalog and in the history of Soul and R&B."

Genesis - Lamb Stew

Been a while since I posted any Gabriel-Era Genesis, so I seek to right that wrong. This one isn't particularly hard to find, but I enjoy it quite a lot. There is certainly no shortage of boots from this era of the band, but almost all of them have some atrocious sound and they stay buried in the back of my collection. I recall that a few years back at an import record store that I saw this for over $75.00 and couldn't even get a preview listen (bastards). This illustrates why I love music-sharing so much - had I paid $75 for it then, the only people getting rich would be the store and their bootlegger source (and no one would hear it, except for me - none of my friends enjoy this era of the group). By posting it here, there is a chance that some soul will hear it and go buy the original albums and then the machine gets fed. Either way, a classic show and tour and I hope you all dig it.

The Police - The Reunion Show 1986

I had mentioned previously, I believe, that I am thrilled at the reunion of these gentlemen. I only wish I had the cash to throw down to see them, but alas, I have kids. This wonderful outing was from their first "reunion" at the Conspiracy Of Hope shows in 1986 for Amnesty International. It's too bad that every time they get together that the old problems begin to resurface, but I have my fingers crossed for an extended stay this time around. Great songs here and it plays like a live 'greatest hits' package. Enjoy, I will be throwing out some more Police concerts and rarities for you all soon. Let me know what you think.

A Tribe Called Quest - Revised Quest For The Seasoned Traveller

Now, I know I may have smoked a bit of herb in the early 1990's but I do not remember the name being spelled that way. Could have sworn it was 'Qwest', but I am digressing. It was easy to tell these boys were going places after I heard that green-vinyl debut single for "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo", way back in....Fall/Winter of 1989. Just smooth beats and quality production cobined with highly skilled rhymes. It's a shame that record sales rarely follow talent, for these fellas deserved a lot more shine than they saw. Either way, this is a little collection of b-sides and 12" remixes that will serve to remind us how great they were. Here's a tidbit from the interwebs -

Rolling Stones - Acetates

A gem of Rolling Stones rarities for the good kids who visit the Ape. It's been a while since I have posted Stones' goodies and I am hereby setting about rectifying that. A majority of this boot was recorded in studios from Jamaica to Germany (with a little London Live Song as well) and has wonderful sound. The sound quality is surprisig considering the other 200-300 Stones boots I have sound like they were recorded in a silo while the Stones songs were playing on an old transistor radio. John Lennon - Let's Have A Party (Early 1970's)

It's been a long while since I posted any Beatle-related rarities, so here I go again. Sound quality is not anywhere near top-notch, but we get these to have them and not so much to play them every day at top volume, right? Since Beatle John is my favorite (a close tie for him and George) I am always seeking the rare and obscure. And what a selection of songs here for us to revel in - Lennon Solo, Beatle songs and covers. Guaranteed to make your bootleg collection shine just a little bit brighter for having it.

Heed the back cover caveat "The songs were all recorded live at a house party in the early 1970s and amateur equipment was used."

The Minutemen - The Punch Line

Hopefully the first of a few quality Minutemen/Firehose posts, if anyone is interested. An online punter said it better than I could so I quote,

"On early works like their first full-length release, 1981's THE PUNCH LINE, the Minutemen fashioned a unique hybrid out of the ashes of punk. At a time when pop music was heading into increasingly slick territory, the Minutemen strictly adhered to punk's short and fast aesthetic, but replaced punk's thunderous chords and nihilism with sprightly funk and politically savvy subject matter. The seriousness and extreme pointedness of their lyrics set the band apart from the American hardcore indie scene of 1981. Rockers All-Stars - Chanting With The Help of the Father (a.k.a. Augustus Pablo's All-Stars)

Oh the joy of the sweet, sweet reggae music on a sunny So-Cal day. Makes one glad to be alive. This particular classic of slabbed wax comes to us with a sterling pedigree. Mixed at King Tubby's & Harry J's , Produced by the Mighty Augustus Pablo and mixed by Prince Jammy. Released in 1978 and still crisp, beautiful chanting and dubbing for all you good children. Hope you all enjoy and I give many thanks for all the kind words and well-wishes from all the friends of the Ape while I was gone. Hope to be back to a more regular schedule here real soon.

Elvis Presley At Sun Records

Hopefully my Christian friends have a sense of humor about the picture at the bottom, I just cracked up when I saw it and had to include it here. Enough of that. I have seen a few 'Elvis at Sun' compilations and have not seen this one before. Also, since it also the only era of his career that I really enjoy, I hoped a few here would as well. That's the great thing about having one's own blog. I always appreciated Elvis as a cultural icon and stylistic signpost, but what I really remember of him was the bloated junkie performing pantomime in Vegas. He died when I was about 6 and it made an impression. I do recall my dad relating stories of how significant his contribution to popular music was to me when I was younger but I wasn't hearing any of it. The more I educated myself on the topic and looked deeper I could see some of what the old folks (sorry) were talking about. He certainly didn't invent rock & roll (he kinda stole, but we'll keep that under our hats, right?) but he was the image of the music and lifestyle when it went berzerk in the 1950's. In the days before his Army induction he seemed genuinely 'dangerous' to mid 50's America (which, albeit isn't saying much by today's standards...) and I can dig that and give him some posthumous respect for it. But, I digress - this is some great early Elvis and should please many ears. Some Choice Peter Tosh Selections

I need not elaborate upon my admiration and love for the late, great Mr. Tosh on this blog. Just check the archives, children. I have yet to tire of his voice, music and message after many years and hope I never do. The man UNDERSTOOD (or as Rasta would opine OVERSTOOD) about human nature and sung with such sincerity that it still brings my ears and heart great satisfaction. The choices here are great one's - 'Ultra Rare Tosh' and 'Live In Rome 1981'. Reggae fans know that Peter could bring it live and it is in great evidence here in the Rome show, which rolls out looking like a 'greatest hits live!' package. Just look at the jams on this one - 'Steppin' Razor', 'Mystic Man', 'Babylon Queendom'(A Personal Favorite of Mine) and so many others. Damn, it's reggae at it's finest. The other joint is 'Ultra Rare' which is someone's small rarities collection (that saves DaddyRich the time of creating his own, which I WILL get to someday..) and has some good cuts and hard-to-find versions. Share the music people, spread the love.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Burnin '(Deluxe 2 Disc Edition)

I try my best not to put albums up here that are easily available in stores, but this one has proven a bit elusive in stores for friends of the Ape - and we all know DaddyRich will provide when he can. Especially if it's some classic reggae, right? This one contains the classic album by itself on disc one and the legendary Leeds concert in 1973 that shows the band in mighty fine form - that was once only available as an inferior-quality bootleg. Although it may seem a little downbeat at times (throughout, basically) it has stood the test of time and contains the zenith of the magic triumvirate's song skills (Marley, Tosh & Livingston, for those who don't know) - just look at the track listing, my friends and marvel at the collection of classics; 'Burnin' & Lootin'' , 'Small Axe', 'Rastaman Chant', 'Get Up, Stand Up', 'Duppy Conqueror'.....Wow.

Marvin Gaye - Live At The Copa Cabana Club 1967

Since the kind folks at SFRP have been augmenting my Marvin collection as of late, I feel I can make an honest run of a mess of his albums and rarities here. I have had a few for years but now have enough to satisfy the collector of this amazing mans music. Apparently Motown stars had been performing regular, sold-out gigs at the Copa and a few released well-received live albums recorded there. Marvin did as well but for some reason (can anyone say Barry Gordy?) his performance was shelved for almost 40 years! Damn. This was just before Marvin had his public problems with Mr. Gordy and decided he needed to have more of a hand in his music and produced 'What's Going On' and 'Let's Get It On' soon after. Oh what a sweet voice and sensitive soul - much too bad about that cocaine habit. We miss you and love you Marvin.

Beck - Live At KCRW October 4, 2006

Another Beck post - yes. Despite the things I hear and read about him as a person, he makes wonderful music. And besides, none of us are always perfectly likeable people all the time, so I give him a break that he has earned from the sheer merit of his great songs. This last album 'The Information', although it was not quite as catchy as 'Guero' is something that continues to grow upon me with each listen. So, lucky for us all, Beck showed up to the amazing 'Morning Becomes Eclectic' show at KCRW and performed with his band and did a bit of talking as well. Put this one on and enjoy.

The Police - Ghost In The Studio (Ghost In The Machine Demos)

Ok, so everyone is as excited and exasperated that The Police are back together (at least for a tour) as DaddyRich is, correct? What a great sound they had, it's too bad they couldn't get along better at the height of their acclaim. But, sometimes it appears that some bands just have too much individual talent to remain a group for too long - certainly the case with these boys. Too much talent pulling in too many directions. I have searched long and hard for Police demos and rarities and have so far only struck a marginal amount of gold and this may well be the only album of demos I have seen thus far. Truly not too many white bands made reggae sound so sweet. I am sure (as with every band's fanatical fans) that their is some online trading (music snobs) group that will gladly hook us all up with the choicest demos and rarities as long as weprovide them with some Police rarities they don't already have and we will be forbidden to transfer said gems into the ghetto-format mp3 file extension. Screw that, no matter what I get I want to share and will not require someone to have to give me something I don't already have in return. What a world. Anyways - pop this disc in and enjoy my friends. Rock/Reggae has rarely ever sounded so good.

When The Wind Blows - Original Soundtrack Album

Here's one you don't see too often and I can't quite remember where I found it - so automatically I give thanks to SFRP, just as a precaution. Since most awesome mp3's come from those fine folks. The talents employed on the songs here is just breathtaking - Squeeze, Roger Waters, Genesis and David Bowie. Damn, that's a nice line-up. I have not had the pleasure of seeing the film and it looks pretty darned hard to come by over here in the U. S. of A. so I may have to wait a while. It sounds quite good actually and I will keep my eyes open for it. Just listen and enjoy, children.

The Mighty Diamonds - Live In Toyo 1985

Yes, some of the sweetest harmonies in all of reggae music live in concert - The Mighty Diamonds. Tabby Shaw, Judge Ferguson and Bunny Simpson crafted some of the finest 3 part voice work that we shall ever be so lucky to hear again. It may be obvious by this point, considering all the roots reggae I have shared, that I don't much care for new reggae music. There may be some great new vocalists and harmonies but whenever I venture into new reggae it all sounds like the same old dancehall vibe that I got tired of as I retreated further back into reggae history. So, I am safe and comfortable in my pre-1990 reggae bubble. Many of the greatest Diamonds songs are represented here in their live glory - "Shame & Pride", "Right Time", Have Mercy" and "The Roots Is There" - you really cannot go wrong with this one...

The Stone Roses - Second Coming Rehearsal Sessions 1993-1994

Oh, the much ballyhooed and oh-so disappointing 'Second Coming' album. Not too many folks love the Stone Roses like DaddyRich, but this album was like a warm turd upon release back then. With the notable exception of 'Ten Storey Love Song', which still gets much play here I could not find much love for the rest. After all the legal wranglings and the much-too-long wait - I was very let down. And none-too-surprised when the break-up came about. A major regret for me was seeing the tickets on sale for a show in L.A. (for over $150 in 1995!) and figuring it wasn't worth the cash. I probably could've scraped it up but I wouldn't have had grocery (or, at that time more importantly - cigarette money) for 2 weeks and that was the deciding factor in it. Oh, the regret. My love for the band has only increased since then and am waiting patiently for them to reform and do Coachella in 2008....

Understandably, this is for only the hardest of the hardcore Roses lovers. Lots of tedium - if you've been around any band whilst rehearsing, it's quite boring. But I treasure it and hopefully one or two of you will as well.

Tom Jones - Live In Las Vegas 1969 at The Flamingo

Wow! I completely forgot that this gem was in my collection. It's the hardest working Welshman in show business at his best! What a great time to have seen him live and in Sin City as well - must have been quite a happening. Full of hits and the inimitable Tom Jones wit and banter - songs like 'It's Not Unusual', 'Delilah', 'Turn On Your Love Light' and, inexplicably 'Hey Jude' which everyone in Vegas seemed to be covering at that time. I just know I have Elvis singing that tune around here somewhere....hmmmm. Put this one on and feel the grooviness and love and don't be afraid to wear a little velour - live it up!

Hello friends of the Ape. If you haven't already noticed - the posts are getting farther between these last 2 weeks. DadyRich has been dealing with some health issues that have taken up much of the free time I used to devote to this blog. I am not quitting, not by a long shot. But because of these concerns I have considerably slowed my output down - much to my regret. This is just to let everyone know that this blog is not slowly fading away but just slowing down for the forseeable future - I have a few more test/procedures to go through this month that I am not looking forward to and hopefully I can get back down to doing my thing here. I know, all of you are saying "who cares? post more free music!" but it's going to be a few weeks before I am back in the swing of this possibly. I wil still check comments and thanks the kind folks who always leave a good word. Also, when I do check the comments (they're sent to an e-mail account) and you type "damn, I missed this one - could you repost?" I have no idea to which record you are referring. And I have way too many posts up now (one of the fastest blogs on the internet, as far as posts and quantity go - certainly for a one-man operation) to troll through old posts to find your comment. Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses Remixes

Had to hijack the image since this one came to DaddyRich without a cover. I will always accept Depeche Mode discs, especially their remixes. I have said it before here and will repeat - no band puts more into their music to fit it for remixes. Some of the best (and worst, sadly as well) have remixed their tunes and given them great new life. Hearing this after so many years still has some great resonance with DaddyRich - the 'Strangelove (Razormaid Classic Remix)' was playing at a club I went to with this girl I was madly in love with in 1994 as her chaperone in case her date turned out badly - I was THAT friend. I am sure many guys here were the same, uugggh. Don't miss those years. This disc has some greats on it as well - so enjoy.

David Bowie - Live With Lou July 8 , 1972

This is a good one here, although Lou is only on a few tracks. It's from such a great period for both of their music, although the drugs and sleepless nights would soon take a terrible toll on them both. Just look at that setlist! 'Ziggy Stardust', 'Hang On To Yourself', 'Changes' and 'Space Oddity' among so many more classics - if It had a version of 'Rock & Roll Suicide' like the film did, I would be in heaven. Although they look a little too close for comfort onthe back, it was a strange time and they make for strange bedfellows, no? Just enjoy the awesome music with these two geniuses.

Radohead - Live at KCRW

Ah yes, the mighty Radiohead. What a behemoth in concert and I look forward to seeing them. You see, all I have is concert upon concert on disc and dvd and patiently await my first live experience. Also, this show is one I cannot find any more information on when I go googling for it. It's not the great 2003 KCRW show that we fans know and love. But, it IS Radiohead and it's them in a live incarnation - and isn't that really all that matters to us? I hope so. It has great versions of two of DaddyRIch's favorites - 'Fake Plastic Trees' and 'No Surprises'.

DaddyRich's Love Compilation Disc 1

Since DaddyRich is lucky to have so much love in his life for so many years (look at that face above, what woman could possibly refuse?), I figured I would share some of the songs that bring it to my feeble old mind. Some are oldies, others are punk rock songs and many are somewhere in between. I also am answering another request by hobbling together another compilation. It seemed to me that of someone like Bob Dylan can do theme shows, why cannot DaddyRIch? Well, for one thing, I lack the software necessary, but I do have lots of music and can put together folders with my favorites - almost the next best thing. So, listen to these with one you love or are trying to get to love you. Who knows? It may do the trick. There will be a few more of these if you peeps are digging it. Let me know....

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy Demos July 1994

It's always good to find Pearl Jam demo's and share them with my good friends. Although I am most often trumped by my good blogger-friend Heather B. at 'I Am Fuel, You Are Friends', I still plug away at it. 'Vitalogy' was really the last Pearl Jam album I listened to as a whole. I still enjoy their live concert discs and assorted tracks but no longer just put one on and listen all the way through. Must be getting real old, eh? Two of my favorite songs of theirs are represented her in demo form and I am thrilled to hear them - 'Corduroy' and 'Better Man'. Hope you like it, too.

Motown Meets The Beatles - Various Artists

Oh boy, what a great idea and it bore such good fruit. Some of Motown's best voices singing some of the best songs ever written, what fan could ever ask for more? In my mind, the only thing missing here is Marvin Gaye singing 'In My Life' - that would have been so beautiful....sigh. But he does do 'Yesterday' and hits it right out of the park, in my humble opinion. SO many great one's here..... just download and enjoy already.

The White Stripes - Life On The Flipsides

I have had this little beauty for a while now and it has many great qualities but information was so scant and contradictory that I decided not to post it until I had more on it. Well, lucky day - here is a review dated from 2004, no less. Man, I am getting slow in my old age....

"Life on the Flipside is a great quality bootleg which is a veritable treasure trove for White Stripes fans. It is comprised of all the early 7" singles, both A and B sides, plus all the B sides of the White Blood Cells singles. As a bonus, there's some live tracks here too.

There's some songs that most serious White Stripes fans will have already. Early single "The Big Three Killed my Baby" is readily available on the debut album, as is early B side "Sugar Never Tasted So Good". "You're Pretty Good Looking" (here presented in a far inferior "Trendy American Remix) and "Hello Operator" are both available on De Stijl, while their cover of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself", originally a B side of "Fell in Love with a Girl", went on to become one of their biggest hits and is available on their must-have album Elephant.

The real reason to buy this compilation, however, is to obtain the rarities. Early single "Let's Shake Hands" is a ragged protype for the like of "Fell in Love..." and "Hypnotise" and its B side, a cover of Marlene Dietrich's "Look Me Over Closely" is one of several excellent cover versions, a creeping little track with its tongue firmly in its cheek. "Lafayette Blues" is one of the band's most interesting singles, going in several different musical directions in just over 2 minutes, while "Big Three.." B Side "Red Bowling Ball Ruth" is a gloriously sloppy straightforward rocker. The now legendary cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" is also here, of course, a surprisingly faithful strummer.

Of course, fans who are really on the ball will already own "Let's Shake Hands" and "Lafayette Blues" as B Sides to "Fell in Love with a Girl" but there are a couple of really must-have singles here that you won't find anywhere else. "Hand Springs" still remains one of the White Stripes finest moments, unjustly hidden away as a split single with the Dirtbombs. It is a story song, spoken beautifully by Jack White in a distorted drawl, each short chapter punctuated by a huge, stomping riff. The lyrics are hilarious and the music is exhilirating. The other real hidden gem is the lost single "Lord, Send Me an Angel", a Blind Willie McTell cover which Jack has personalised with his own name in the lyrics. A driving, acoustic blues track, it was released as a single alongside the De Stijl album but was not included on that album which instead featured another McTell cover, "Your Southern Can is Mine".

Another real rarity is the trio of Captain Beefheart covers released on Sub Pop, a lost oddity. Lead track "Party of Special Things to Do" is a bizarre rocker with a rip-roaring fuzzy riff but a poor fade-out ending. The acoustic "China Pig" is a plodding guitar only track which works surprisingly well and "Ashtray Heart" is the best of the three covers with another great riff and frenzied performance. At best these tracks are amusing oddities, although they are worth having for completists.

"Candy Cane Children" is a Christmas song of sorts, although its hardly full of festive jollity. This is another real rarity, realesed first as part of a compilation 7" featuring artists on the Flying Bomb label and later as a limited xmas single, "Candy Cane Children" is great lost track although it takes some getting into. The final real rarity is "Red Death at 6:14", previously only available on a compilation of Detroit groups. Its another oddity that grow with every listen and well worth having for its joyous whoops and thunderous riffs.

What's left are the easier to obtain White Blood Cells B sides but there's plenty worth having among them if you missed buying the singles. The acoustic "live at Hotel Yorba" tracks are charming, with Jack and Meg both singing sweetly together on the excellent Loretta Lynn cover "Rated X" and a minimalist version of "Hotel Yorba". The live cover of Bob Dylan's "Lovesick" is grand, a fittingly heavy rocking tribute to one of the man's lesser known great songs. The two live Radio 1 session tracks are both versions of tracks from the band's debut. "Suzy Lee" is fairly similar to the album version but the Robert Johnson cover "Stop Breaking Down" couldn't be more different. On their debut album the band turned in a heavy rocking, fast paced and utterly brilliant version of the song. This session version showcases a slower paced, more laid back version which is closer to the original and almost as cool as their other version.

There are also a couple of extra rare live tracks thrown in for good measure. The rabid version of "Skrewdriver" on the Late Show is great, especially when the band drop the sound a notch to insert a short passage from "Your Southern Can is Mine" and when Jack sings "I got a little feelin' going now, Meg's got a little feelin' going now". A trio of XFM sessions provide slightly muted, uninspired versions of "Hotel Yorba", "You're Pretty Good Looking" and "Fell in Love With a Girl", all drained of energy and sounding a little off-key (and not in the good way). Two more versions of "Fell in Love..." follow, which seems a little excessive even for people who can't get enough of the song. The version from the late show reinstates the energy missing from the XFM version and mixes in the vocal and drum track "Little Room" expertly. Jack's vocal performance verges on lunatic and all this converges to make the best performance of the song other than the classic original. The final version from the MTV awards is a little more sanitised in keeping with the atmosphere of the tightly controlled event. It segues into a very fine live reading of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", however, which utterly upstages the "Fell in Love..." segment. Of the 6 bonus the live tracks, the ones to treasure are the two Late Show performances.

All this variety makes Life on the Flipside worth every penny so definitely pick it up if you get the rare chance to. It fills in most of the crucial gaps in the collection of a White Stripes completist who has only managed to obtain the four albums and the later singles."

Various Artists - 1234 Punk and New Wave 1976-1979 [5 Disc Box Set]

Most all my good friends here at the Ape know well how I feel about most comilations.... nuff said. But every once in a while you find one that has some real merit as a collection of really great songs. This here would be one example. Now, of course, if I had the choice I would have included/omitted a few but am overall impresed with this pretty-well comprehensive collection of one of my favorite era's of music. A certain online store named for a race of beautiful, giant warrior women has this to say - and I find it apt -

"No single box set--however sumptuously packaged, however comprehensively compiled--could hope to contain the bewildering, diverse array of musical styles and opinions that was brought together under the loose description "punk" between 1976 and 1979. There were so many fresh ideas and concepts--the final, irreversible emancipation of women in rock and the creation of an entirely new, non-R&B, guitar-based music form--contained within that one word, no compilation could hope to represent it fairly. 1-2-3-4 has a damn good try, though. Five CDs, featuring 100 tracks from the good, bad and downright ugly of punk.
This is a compilation for the historical completist, taking in everyone from the early trail-blazers (Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Ramones, Television) through to the 1978 Rough Trade independent outburst (Raincoats, Slits, Pop Group) and the politically-charged (Gang Of Four, Au Pairs, Tom Robinson Band).

The post-punk "new wave" explosion is represented by the Buzzcocks, Devo and XTC as are the art-rockers by Siouxsie, Ultravox and Pere Ubu).

Even the novelty records get a mention: Jilted John and Television Personalities. The list is virtually endless.

Considering the genre's (relative) lack of commercial impact at the time, it's astonishing how its repercussions are still being felt today. The punk explosion was Year Zero for the music press; it was the direct precursor of the American grunge movement and it became the initial working model for the DIY dance and rap explosions. Moreover, punk was a point of influence that no "indie" band creating music today can hope to avoid.Elastica, the Stereophonics,Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring, PublicEnemy and Prodigy are just some of the bands the can find their mirror selves in punk. The White Stripes - Complete B-Sides & Compilation Tracks Collection

Oh those wonderful White's, Jack and Meg. I was never a big fan of the blues when I was younger, as most aren't. It all just sounded a little too dated and didn't move me at all. Many years later, The White Stripes take old blues songs and themes and give them such great life and it sounds so good to these old ears. This was a find at the mighty SFRP (all respect due) and the link there seems dead so I will zip up mine and share it with all you good folks. The Sisters Of Mercy - Some Boys Wander By Mistake (Bootleg)

Another band among my favorites that has been too long ignored at the Ape. This is the companion piece to 'Some Girls Wander By Mistake' that I posted a while back. There are a few more Sisters records that will be popping up here from time to time. I believe this was one among the couple hundred that were killed when Rapidshare,de tanked on me and, although I imported the links, none seem to work. So, to the folks who have kindly requested re-up's of some of those - please just be patient a little longer because I will put a few up here soon. Fred Wesley & The JB's - Damn Right I Am Somebody

Oh yes, DaddyRich is bringing Funky back. It's been a while since I have brought out the funkay goodness and this record has the players, the pedigree and the classic sound all in one. It was put quite nicely online and I will quote...

"An incredible album -- quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit -- rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" -- showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. Counting Crows - Live 1994

Here's a semi-oldie from a band, and the greatest period of their work, that DaddyRich admires greatly. I can still recall picking up a music magazine in 1993 and reading an article about this band and the recrding of their first album. It mentioned about them being very accomplished musiciand and their lead singet had a knack for Van Morrison-esque flights of voice and I really didn't need to read much more before I was on the hunt for the disc. When it came out I was surely not disappointed and truly enjoyed it. Even since then it has been played quite often, although I seemed to lose interest with each succeeding release I still have a great respect for them and they seem one of the band du jour's to not admit that one likes. But we all know Daddy is above all that. So I hope a few will be pleased to see this and grab this one and enjoy it. It also contains at the tail end alternate versions for two of my favorite songs of theirs, 'Anna Begins' and 'Round Here' - enjoy the goodness, children.
