I had a friend recently ask me to begin putting some comedy discs/albums on here becasue I have a lot of them just taking up space on my hard drives. Most of the comedy I own is pretty old - I am of the Richard Pryor/George Carlin/Lenny Bruce school of comic appreciation. I don't know too many newer comedians stuff but we recently lost Mitch and I am hoping to have someone read this blog and decide to give this guy a try and see what all the fuss was about. He was very much like Steven Wright (at least to me) in that his show was a series of hilarious one-liners with some short jokes thrown in for good measure. So, if anyone else thinks this comedy bit is good too then maybe I will start posting some more as time goes on. This is a hell of a good disc to start with. R.I.P. brother - you were one funny motherfucker.

Pink Floyd - From The Other Side (june 1972 Studio Rehearsals for Dark Side Of The Moon)


Here's a little rarity for you kind folks that DaddyRich enjoys a lot. There is certainly no shortage of Pink Floyd alternates, is there? We all have the 20 disc "A Tree Full Of Secrets', right? That is one of the most exhaustive collections I had seen to that point but now realize that there are some bands with even more available. I did a quick search and didn't find this one in too many places and it's a tasty tidbit that might make me want to place some more Floyd rarities on here - after a little Beatle's binge, of course.

TIME--no solo lead guitar after "started gun"...no Breathe reprise


BRAIN DAMAGE--no laughing on fade up..."lunatic is in my head" fade up is different from what precedes on record (which is chorus instead of instrumental section)..."if cloud burst..." has lead guitar not on record...no voice speech in next section, but lead guitar instead...lead guitar on end after "dark side of the moon.

US AND THEM--sax solo at the beginning has a different ending... no echo on voice...sax continues under voice into second verse.. into "forward he cried"...and next verse, "black and blue" (record starts at "who's who" and goes to "up and down")... sax continues into "up and down" verse and into "haven't you heard" with no voice over. On the record the sax is the same take but just mixed in and out.

The Beatles - Last Licks (The Complete Rooftop Concert)

Ahhhh, the great ones. Here we have their last performance together and what an iconic moment it was. Even the Simpsons had an allusion to it with George Harrison opining 'been there, done that' when Homer's barbershop quartet had their rooftop farewell. This music has been available to Beatle fanatics since pretty much the day it was recorded (depending upon who you knew) but it has been available to the rest of us via shady dubs and bad recording practices. This little diamond was put together with the best of all available sources and compiled from numerous boots to piece together the best complete concert for our ears. Their hard work is appeciated and will be enjoyed by any true fan.

Classic MC'izms - Unreleased Demo's


This is one super rarity that any true b-boy would treat like gold. And after treasuring it for himself, well the very next thing to do would be to hook up all the others who would want it. It's not very often that we get to hear demo's and early live versions of classic rap songs since most mc's would be remiss to release something that wasn't ther best effort. I hope that as this art form continues to mature and get more comfortable with itslef that we will be seeing double-disc reissues of all the classic albums with a bonus disc containing demo's and accapellas and such. A man can wish, right? I don't know who put this one together but they have my eternal thanks. Share this one with your friends everyone, it's that good and that historic.

"It was twenty years ago today....."



Has it really been 20 years since the first issue of Alan Moore's 'Watchmen'? Time has flown and crawled through these past two decades for Daddy. I believe I have made no secret of my love for great comic books and this one is on the short list of greatest ever written. Thanks to Mr. Moore comics have never been the same, for better or worse, after his insightful and poignant look at what we never knew about super heroes. Many have imitated but never duplicated the exhaustive and thorough look at the genre that we were afforded lo those many years ago. It' a shame that a sequel will never happen and, for that matter, that the movie has been bounced to so many different writers and directors for so many years that we may never see it come to wide-screen fruition. Please, pick up the graphic novel and READ IT. Daddy wouldn't lie to you.

Trent Reznor - Bridge School Benefit October 21 & 22 2006

This is the first recording I have seen available from his 2 solo shows for the wonderful Bridge School Benefit (just read and see the work they do) and I recommend them for only the most hardcore fans because they are not soundboard takes, they are good enough for now and I will keep an eye out for better recordings. The Damned - Damned, Damned, Damned


What is considered by many to be the very first punk record made in the U.K. I am not sufficiently British enough or pretensious enough to refute that claim. I only know that when I hear music I either love it or hate it. Music rarely 'grows on me', I am quick to judgement hardly ever wrong (to myself) when it comes to my tatses. I came to this album rather late in my punk exploration and it was a classic by the time I first spun it, depending upon who you ask. Ramshackle production values and energetic playing/songwriting won me over rather quickly. Been a Daned fan ever since and am considering whether to see them in L.A. soon but probably won't. There are many times when I have just been too late in discovering a band or having already discovered them, being to lazy in seeing them (money for shows being hard to come by sometimes) and this is the same with this great band. It's also much like some other bands that I love(d) and how seeing them now wouldn't compare to what they had once been - kind of like how I love the Rolling Stones but wouldn't pay money to see them and would have been thrilled if I was old enough to have been an adult prior to 1975 and enjoyed their show. So many bands fall into that category for me now - just an old geezer.

Ride - Waves (BBC Sessions 1990-1994)

A vastly underrated band from the great 'Madchester' era, even though they hail from Oxford. I still remember hearing 'Vapour Trail' for the first time and how blown away that I was and still have a deep respect for this band. For some reason (lack of commercial sound, willingness to sell-out...) they never reached the heights that lesser contemporaries achieved. I can't help but believe that fame didn't mean all that much to them - they did what they did best and bowed out after several great discs. Besides, isn't Andy Bell with Oasis now? I am sure he prefers critical acclaim to worldwide sycophancy anyways. Here are 17 tracks - some recorded for the immortal Mr. Peel and the rest for other BBC luminaries and showcase a more lo-fi approach to their performances but does nothing to take away any of the towering wall-of-guitars that they had perfected. Such great musicianship and thoughtful lyrics - no wonder they never made a big splash in America.

Various Artists - Jamaican Dub


Dub music, as much as I love and dig it had me worried for a minute or two. I wondered if I stopped hanging out in rooms filled with smoke from the sweet leaf if I would still appreciate it appeal. Thanks be to Jah that it still sounds so sweet and enjoyable after a few smoke-free years. Many folks here (and elsewhere) are completely oblivious to dub music and it's wonderfully colorful practicioners and their ample studio wizardry that I have to offer my help to them. It's a great thing to be able to share. If you are at all interested - there are many great online articles and entire websites devoted to the dub movement and even though I draw the line in the sand at 1989 for any I own or listen to, I bet there is still some great dubbing being done in the tradition of the founding dubfathers - Lee 'Scratch' Perry & The Aggrovators, King Tubby, Scientist, Prince Jammy and so many others.... more to come.

Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses Remixes (Limited Edition)


Earlier I had posted about how much I still can groove to Depeche Mode even though it's quite uncool to admit that nowadays. A good thing about growing older is not bothering to care what others may think. My friend Dave made a point of buying up every 12" single from these guys and it is obvious that they were the kings of the 12" remix single and EP. Uncontested champion of the 12 minute remix version and extended dance remix, without a doubt. At a time when hip-hop ruled vinyl and remixing, Depeche Mode were way ahead of the alternative music curve and that is just one more area where they were pioneers and visionaries. These are all great versions and come highly recommended for you and your speakers.

Biz Markie - Make The Music With Your Mouth, Biz 12" EP


Another little chunk of hip-hop history for you great people. I am imagining anyone who is a student of rap music (many of my friends/visitors here) already own this and the wonderful album that followed but I would like to turn on a few new folks if I can. Most people already are familiar with Biz from (yikes) the horrible 'Just A Friend' which, although a crappy song for the pop charts that gathered some new fans, does serve to give a newcomer a sense of what this cat is about. Biz is a great human beat box but his allure lies more in his offbeat sense of humor and all around Biz-ness. Still active on the scene and getting praise as a pioneer from the late old school (even though most all of his rhymes were written by Big Daddy Kane, but I digress....) and often seen at Beastie Boys sightings we love the Biz and are still waiting for more. Beastie Boys - Live at 99x Atlanta


This little bundle of hip-hop goodness was sent to me last week by a friend and I am forever grateful. I have not been able to find many in-studio appearances by the Beasties and love the one's I do have. This was apparently one of those 'private' shows for radio call-in winners and they were treated to 3 songs from the boys and an interview as well. Their interviews I can usually give or take because they don't always seem interested in talking but the skills on the mic are undeniable. Plus I still got a Beastie hangover from last weekend in Lake Forest - that show was on-point, my friends. It was just difficult to do all that walking with my cane - but worth it. Anyone else make the show? Of course, more Beasties to come.

The Beatles - Acoustic Masterpieces :The Escher Demo's

It was quite a revelation for me a few years ago to find out that there was any Beatle's acoustic material floating around. Mind you, this was well before any of the Anthologies were released and bootleg trading on the internet was still in it's infancy. Then I came across this gem and it is a perfect addition to the cuts on 'Acoustic Submarine' for anyone who already has that gem. Worry not, I will put it here if anyone needs it. I am relatively sure that the moniker "masterpieces" refers to their very existence and has nothing to say on the sound quality. Please let us all remember that portable recording equipment in 1969 is nothing like today - in fact to call any of it even "portable" is generous. What we do have, however, is the great Beatle's in a rare relaxed mood near the end of their association with eachother and playing early versions of some classics. My best suggestion is to sit back and enjoy the greatness. Also, thanks to all who sent their best wishes during my time off for hospital tests - glad they're over (for now, at least).

This really puts a damper on all the albums I was planning on upping this weekend for you, my good friends. So - like good Benjamin Franklin in the picture above I will take some extra time out for study and mental edification. I have been re-reading/studying many of my old favorites - including, of course good Ben's Autobiography. Also on my desk presently are Issac Ware's wonderful translation of 'Andrea Palladio's The Four Books Of Architecture' and Manly Palmer Hall's "The Secret Teachings Of All Ages' as well as 'The Hermetic Museum: Alchemy & Mysticism' by Alexander Roob. Doing whatever I can to fight the decay my brain feels with the onset of old age - so let's all take a day off and do some reading. Well, at least I will until I leave for the Beastie Boys concert in a few hours. Have a great weekend and hopefully Rapidhsare will be up and running real soon and I can get back to the sharing.

Culture - Two Sevens Clash

I had meant to post something around the time of the death of the great Joseph Hill but had got caught up in other things. Truly one of reggae's greatest consciences and sweetest voices. Although the prophecy of two sevens clashing never came to fruition (thank God) and the Rastafari's really bet on the wrong horse with Selassie (I believe he took advantage of them more than they were in the wrong) it takes nothing away from the purity of their belief and songs. This is a great primer for becoming familiar with Culture, I also highly recommend 'International Herb' as a follow-up and suggest you do as directed. I found an online review at ReggaeShack that is quite informative, unlike most of my personal ramblings here.

The charismatic Joseph Hill founded the vocal trio Culture around 1976. He and his cousins Albert Walker and Roy Dayes initially called themselves "The African Disciples", but soon changed their name after hooking up with producer Joe Gibbs. Before Culture split up in 1982, they had an unfortunate engagement with Duke Reid's famous "Treasure Isle Studios" (the unauthorized album "Africa Stand Alone"), and a series of three excellent albums at Sonia Pottinger's "High Note" label ("Harder Than The Rest", "Combolo" and "International Herb"). Culture performed at the legendary "One Love Peace Concert" in 1978, and later toured heavily in the U.K. with the Revolutionaries.

This debut album is often considered as one of the masterpieces of the roots era. The title song swept across the island like a wildfire, and also became a major success in the U.K. Most Rastafarians believed the apocalypse would begin when the two sevens clashed, the most fearsome date of concern was July 7th, 1977, when the four sevens clashed. However, the song itself was fearless, and for those of true faith, the end of the world did not spell doom, but release from the misery of life.

"The backing, provided by the Revolutionaries, perfectly complements the lyrics' ultimate optimism, and is quite distinct from most dread albums of the period. Although definitely rootsy, Culture had a lighter sound than most of their contemporaries. Sadly, no other group followed Culture's lead, and even the trio itself did not take advantage of it, especially after parting ways with Gibbs. When the group re-emerged in the mid-'80s, they swiftly moved into a reggae light/world music mode - a world apart from where they started. Thus, "Two Sevens Clash" remains forever in a class all of its own."

By far, my favorite of the many Beatles bootlegs I now have and hopefully will be one of yours soon as well. It's already well known about my love for the rarities, demo's and studio stuff that drives my collection here. This is a music voyeur's dream - Sir George Martin in the studio at Abbey Road and playing individual parts of the classic songs and tweaking a four-track to explain to us lucky listeners how these songs were put together. I am so enamored of the laying down and putting-together of songs that this one never leaves my iTunes and I continue to look for similar sessions all the time. If you are any kind of Beatles collector and for whatever reason do not have this one - take it and share it and remember only DaddyRich would share this one with you.

The Descendents - Somery


Last time I posted the Descendents was 'Milo Goes To College', which is still my favorite of theirs but this album here is a great compilation of their best. Although I am guessing they feel bit sad about bands that have come after them using their formula - quick, poppy songs about love, life and being young, etc. and having the new bands basically .... suck. You cannot fault the originals for the low quality of the knock-offs - look at how many bands cite The Ramones as a great influence and listen to the crap those bands are putting out. Sure, they are some adolescent moments on here, but they were very young then, after all so things like 'Enjoy!', 'I Wanna Be A Bear' (with the famous "I wanna smell your muff!" should be listened to and enjoyed in their particular context. Without reproach or explanations needed are songs like 'Bikeage', 'Hope', Good Good Things' and many more on this selection. Classics and a class act here for you people - see them live soon if you can.

The Trashcan Sinatras - On A B-Road (B-Sides and Cover Versions)

Another post from my favorites - the Trashcans. This was requested a while back and was one I was planning on upping anyway - so it works out well for everyone involved. Cannot say enough good things about these boys and I am continually puzzled that they are not crazy large famous by now. Sure, they can be a bit hard to categorize but their obviously great musicianship and Frank Reader's songwriting and amazing voice are wonderful beyond any doubts. I fault radio and it's dilapidated state for the last...oh. say...20 years for not championing great bands who write great songs over the slickly-produced crap that's been created by the big record companies. There I go again on a rant, but I will stop myself here. Listen and enjoy and rest assured I will be posting more of them and do yourself a favor and buy this and all of thior records you can find - I bought multiple copies of many just to keep the support up for them.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Crying For Freedom (3 Record Box Set Holland Import)



By now I am sure that any audiophile worth their wait in vinyl has the 'Songs Of Freedom' Box set - which is to my mind one of the better uses of musical technology that I can think of. This man's music MUST be preserved and allowed to be played for all future generations. Also, needless to say to anyone who is a Marley/Wailers junkie is also hip to the fact that there just aren't too many more rarities to be found - I have about 100 that cover most of the bases but was pleased to find this one a couple of years back. This set differs greatly from the 'Songs Of Freedom' box and is a worthy companion to the aforementioned classic set. It contains many classics from their catalog over it's expansive 3 album lifespan but also includes seldom-heard beauties like 'Can't You See?' and 'Stand Alone' among the more obvous choices. Fans of vinyl will also hear the wonderful sonic clarity that records gives us and the tell-tale pops, ticks and hiss that take us way back to the days before compact discs and mp3. Please enjoy and give to a Marley fan who thinks they already have everything.

Big Apple Rappin' - The Early Days of Hip-Hop Culture in New York City 1979-1982 (2 Volumes)



My hip-hop roots go all the way back to 1980 and knew even then for certain (all the certainty any 9 year-old boy can muster up) that THIS was for me and my friends - it was our thing. My parents had rock and roll in their youth and in the early 1980's rock on the radio was in some baaaad shape, my friends. This music was what spoke to us and left us wanting more. Many of these tracks are the most hard-to-find and therefore very valuable to any b-boy who wants to also consider themselves a historian as well as fan. I highly recommend the purchase of this bad boy and you can revel in the sheer joy of it all - vinyl and phots, flyer art and much more. A true b-boy dream .

Bushspeak : The Curious With & Wisdom of George W. Bush



I have had this little nugget for a while here and have had many laughs from it. It's the strangest kinds of laughs, though. I believe the sheer fact that I find him hilarious and dangerous will inform all who read that I did not vote for this man. How he got where he is and what history will make of him are a mystery to me. The world is a much worse place for his having been here is the only epitaph that comes to mind. I have been hesitant to post this for fear of losing some good friends that don't care for music blogs mixed with politics. Fear not, dear readers, this will be my first and final foray into the sticky mess of political blogging. I feel the best I can do is let this fool speak for himself. Also - everyone get off your collective ass and vote in every possible election you can and maybe this kind of man will not be given such power in the future.

The Cult - Rare Cult Box Set 1985-1995


This here is a doozy of a box, my friends. Way too many disc for me to do all at once if I want to have any kind of variety on this blog but it is such an essential to piece to any discriminating collector's shelf that I will put one up at a time. I love the folks at SFRP that were kind enough to share this with me and in return, I am spreading the love. Ian Astubury has a very distinct voice that cannot be mistaken for anyone else and his songs are top-notch. It's also easy to be a fan of Billt Duffy's great guitar skills - did you know he almost became a member of The Smiths when they were first forming? What interesting music could have come from that collaboration? The world will never know. But The Cult has stood the test of time and continue to give us great rock music. Highlights of the first disc are the radio sessions of Cult classics (a pun!) that are very raw and energetic and guaranteed to delight you kind friends of mine.

The Ramones - The 914 Demo's


This little beauty is available under so many different names that I will not even bother to list them all. I have it under 3 different names on my hard drive. It was recently offered at Big O Magazine , whom I highly recommend for anyone with a deep appreciation of ROIR discs. Can not recommend them highly enough. The legend goes that these demo sessions were recorded in September of 1975 in New York City at 914 Stdios (hence the name) and were eventually released as an import 10" in Europe. The energy and obvious love for what they play shines through to me to this very day whenever I hear these (and most all of their) songs. No artifice or pretension to epic songs or flights of fantasy - just good, solid rock and roll with punk ethos. They made it look so easy that a million kids around the world picked up a guitar/bass or drumsticks and said 'Hell, if THEY can do it - I know I can!' There can be no debate about the influence of The Ramones on not only 'punk rock' but the back-to-basics of the whole DIY attitude that spawned so many great bands and continues to do so everyday. Love these guys and R.I.P.

Eric B. & Rakim - Unreleased Classics (5 Track Cassette Rip)



Now this is an example of how much love DaddyRich has for you all. Until last year I never even knew this tape existed and I was/am a big fan of Eric B. & Rakim. But, most importantly, I DON'T live in New York - so when stuff is leaked out of studios years after being recorded and sold on cheap cassette tapes in Central Park and traded from friend-to-friend I am on the West-Coast-Ass- End of the grapevine (tapevine?). My friends and I eagerly devoured the first 2 albums from this classic duo and somewhere out in the ether is our original 12" of 'Check Out My Melody' uncensored that I would love to have in my hands once again. I miss vinyl and shopping for new records every week but it has become a wealthy man's hobby. Buying a cd doesn't give me the same tactile thrill. There is something about the sheer size of the record sleeve and the pictures and the artistic ability that went on to producing a great cover and backside. Compact Disc doesn't allow for much of that kind of reflection and study (anyone ever try to actually READ anything on the inside of the 'Paul's Boutique' disc when it came out? It was like trying to read something while shroomin') but, I digress. I am almost tempted to buy old Laser Discs of movies that I love becasue the presentation and execution of the real good ones makes DVD packages look like a steamy pile of crap. Ah well, old men tend to ramble about gool old days gone by. Back to the topic - because of the lack of documentation we kind of have to take these as they come. Unreleased and never-heard-before Eric B. & Rakim should make anyones day. The quality is about what one would expect from such a rip but, at the end of the day, I'd have taken them any way I could have gotten them. Peace.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unpublished Songs

Well, hopefully here's one that not too many of you already have. In my searches for rarities and alternate takes and unpublished material - this gem pops in front of my eyes. As I have said all too often before and will, undoubtedly find myself repeating again (old age and all) I love this band but can't really find myself grooving to their newest releases. I am not any kind of music snob or oldies purist (that I know of at least...) but the older albums had much more for me to enjoy. So it was a treat to find this disc (label unknown - maybe just a fan comp.) but it contains many great songs. More precise information has proven hard to come by so I offer this as is and can almost guarantee it will be enjoyed after digestion. I have seen pieces of this floating around ondifferent boots and comps but am grateful to have all in one place. So,sit back and enjoy some tasty Peppers.

20 songs and a crying 3 year-old in the next room mean Daddy won't be typing the tracklist, my humble apologies...

The Cure - Peel Sessions (1988)

Another of my many favorite Peel Sessions discs right here. At the height of their particular powers as well. Although short at only 4 songs and leaves you wanting more - but that IS the point, isn't it? What I most appreciate about the Peel Sessions discs is their ability to serve as a seperate entity from whatever album or tour or whatever else was going on with a certain artist or band. Here we have these songs as they were first performed and they sound fresh and vital even with the passage of (yikes!) 18 years and aren't full of the world-weariness that they play these songs with now. Just give a listen and you, too may also learn to prefer these great versions over the album tracks. Just maybe.

Bad Brains - Black Dots (1979)

I actually meant to upload a more rare gem from Bad Brains but this album here is as good a starter as any, isn't it? And once the new fans are hip to the songs I will load up my intended set. For some unknown reason this great sounding set of songs were recorded in 1979 and not released to us, the public - until 1996. I missed the Bad Brains train back in the 1980's and have since done quite nicely catching up I believe and would love to turn some new folks onto this music. These recordings differ enough from their album counterparts, in my humble opinion, to make them worthwhile and unique in their own right.
There are some classics on here, like 'Attitude', 'Banned In D.C.', 'Don't Need It' and 'Regulator' that'll whip up an instant mosh pit in your living rooms - and isn't that what we all want, really? I guess I should ask if anyone here would prefer the 'Pay To Cum!' LP next or 'Attitude: The ROIR Sessions' - both of which I enjoy greatly and may just upload both, regardless of anyone's preference.

Prince - Camille (Unreleased Album 1986)

OK, this wil be the last Prince post for the forseeable future, I know the non-Prince fans are getting restless. In much the same way this began to look like a Smiths/Morrissey blog last month; I guess I will be focusing a few posts per month on a particular artist and that's how it will be. People seem to enjoy it so far so I will run with it. I have had this album as an mp3 for a few years now but information is kind of sketchy on it so I did a search an found a great description at a great blog 'Raw Like Sashimi' (only used his description, not his link) which I would urge all to check out and comment. Here's the lowdown from RLS -

"Camille is an unreleased album by Prince from 1986. The album was planned to consist of 8 tracks in a sped up vocal that sounded like a female voice. Although it has never been verified, the origins and beginnings of the Camille persona are arguably audible on the mighty infamous b-side called "Erotic City." The album was to be released under the name of "Camille" (who would not be pictured on the cover) and not as a "Prince" album.

After the cancellation of the Dream Factory project, Prince went right back into the studio to record new material. He wrote a track called "Housequake" with a speeded vocal that resembled a woman's voice. He was so pleased with the track that he composed an entire album's worth of material in the same altered vocals. The voice itself began to take on the persona of "Camille" (named after the French hermaphrodite) and an album was configured. The album had gotten to the stage of being given a catalogue number when Prince changed his plans and began work on the 3-LP opus Crystal Ball.

Many of the Camille tracks were incorporated into Crystal Ball but when the album was trimmed down to Sign 'O' the Times, only three made the cut. A fourth track, "Shockadelica," was actually written as a tongue-in-cheek message to long-time friend of Prince and former guitarist for The Time, Jesse Johnson, who had released a highly-successful solo album entitled Shockadelica the year prior to Prince releasing Sign 'O' the Times.

It was Prince's way of communicating to Johnson Prince's own belief that an album with an incredible title like "Shockadelica" should have an equally incredible title track. (Johnson's album "Shockadelica" did not have a song with the same name on it; conversely, the only albums that Prince has recorded to date which have not had a track bearing the album's name were his self-titled debut, and the infamous Black Album, which was pulled from release at the last minute by Prince and only saw the light of day years later as a result of contract disputes with Warner Bros. Records.)

Despite the project never seeing the light of day in its original form, Prince was reportedly very pleased with the Camille material, and most of the tracks have since been released on other Prince projects.

The Fat Boys - Self-Titled (1984)

I guess unless you grew up in America in the early 80's you may not know what kind of force the Fat Boys let loose upon our youth. Already knee-deep in hip-hop by that time I (forgive the pun, please) ate up their first album here. Beatboxing was something that we'd all heard or heard-of but never had it fit so nicely into a song sructure. All too often the Fat Boys have been written off as lame or not real enough by critics. That's why Oscar Wilde said of critics ,"They know the price of everything and the value of nothing". They were a powerful force in early mainstream rap music and I wish to pay my respects here by sharing this with you. There are to be many more old school hip-hop posts until I get off my ass and create that old school blog I have been muttering about here at home. So, please enjoy and share with friends. Peace.

Minor Threat - The First Demo Tape (1981)

I just got this wonderful disc and it is great for reminiscing about the old days. I wasn't a punk or a straight-edge kid back then but I had friends who would play this while they skated and I was perfecting my human beat-box skills. At least they got better at skating, but I digress. I only wish it had the demo for 'In My Eyes' - "you say I make no difference?/ At least I"M FUCKING TRYING!/ WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU DONE?" Well spoken, Mr. MacKaye, well spoken indeed.
As ever, cduniverse has a great short description-

It was early 1981 when Washington D.C.'s Minor Threat made their first trip to the studio. The band recorded all of the songs that they had written in the short time they had been together (three or four months), but were apparently unsatisfied with their performance & never bothered to do a final mix of the tape. Instead they went back into the studio a month later & recorded what would become their debut, the 8-song eponymous 7 inch EP. The unmixed tape of the first demo was discovered when Dischord started work on the 'Twenty Years of Dischord' box-set. Ian MacKaye & Don Zientara (of Inner Ear Studios) mixed the tape in December of 2001, but the release was shelved by the label while work was being done on the box-set. These recordings have only been available previously as low quality rough mixes on bootlegs. Tracks include, 'Minor Threat', 'Stand Up', 'Seeing Red', 'Bottled Violence', 'Small Man, Big Mouth',

Rolling Stones - Beat Beat Beat at The Beeb (BBC Archives 1963-1965)

My favorite Rolling Stones era, the old days. I am a fan of the early incarnation with Brian Jones although I really can't explain why. I have read a few Stones books about the band and have come to view Jones as a really sad character in the history of rock music. Of course he was a junkie (of what degree, we don't know for sure) but they all were then . basically. He just seemed to be pushed out of the band by Jagger & Richards until he fell into a spiraling despair that eventually ended with his way too early death. Regardless, these songs are mainly old American blues numbers mixed with Stones songs that'll please any ear. I won't go off on a tangent about what I think of them now but they DID make some of the best music ever recorded.

I am in a bit of a rush today (got to go get Beastie Boys tickets in a little while) so I can't type the 55-song tracklist but, trust me, it'll be worth hearing and it's available somewhere online for you to add. At least the songs are tagged.

Prince - The 12" Singles Collection Disc 1

Another Prince post, you ask? Hell yes, I say. As I crawl around the internet I am finding more great music than I could possibly imagine and I believe we should share with our friends whenever we find something cool. It does not get cooler than Prince, does it? These are extended 12" versions of some of his best jams and is therefore worthy of our attentions. Extended versions of 'Erotic City', 'Let's Go Crazy' and 'Little Red Corvette' are among the choice selections here. Do yourself a favor and throw these on when 'the time is right' and think of Daddy when you do. The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (Deluxe 2 Disc Edition)

I have been lucky enough to finally get all the deluxe edition discs for The Cure at last (well, all they have released so far) and am loving them. Every one here knows that I am mad for demo's and alternate takes so this should surprise no one that I pursued these with great ardour. The same with the 'Join The Dots' boxed set. Aside from 'Japanese Whispers' (is that in deluxe format yet? I haven't seen it anywhere) I think this is themost accessible of The Cure discography - for those who can look past the old, doom & gloom image of the band. Robert Smith's fine and amusing songwriting skills are displayed here as well as top notch playing by the band. Most notable for the hits 'Just Like Heaven' and 'Why Can't I Be You?'. there are also wonderful songs just waiting for a deeper listen. The second disc is full of home and band demo's that just drive audiophile's like myself crazy with glee. Daddy has a lot more Cure for anyone who has a particuar one they may need - so let a brother know and I wil do my best to help out. So, put on your black clothes and eye liner and sway back and forth ever so gently whilst this one spins....

Unbelievable! - Madchester Hits Disc 1

I am not always fond of compilation discs that try to encapsulate era's for us - I am usually to be found creating my own. This one comes pretty close to capturing what we all loved from that bygone period. Although there are a few inclusions that puzzle me - it must be recalled that I was in Southern California for this whole period of time and didn't hear all the music at the time it came out. But some artists like Adamsci and The Shamen I have never heard of before this (or since) and I puzzle at the sight of 'How Soon Is Now?' (although a sentimental favorite) which precludes most of these tracks by at least 5 years. I have in here somewhere, amongst my mess, a Madchester collection chosen by Bez from the Happy Mondays that is even better. Until then put this one on and play it loud - no 'E' required to have fun. There are greats from the Mondays, Stereo MC's, James and the Inspiral Carpets here though.

Sublime - Jah Won't Pay The Bills (1991 Cassette Rip)


I can only reminisce about Sublime and their great music now. It didn't seem like all that long ago that we didn't go more than a month without seeing them in concert - but it has been about 12 or 13 years. Definitely getting old. This little gem was, once upon a time, the hardest of the rare Sublime joints to track down. Thanks to the internet and file sharing we can all get hard-to-find music much more easily. It seems to be quite de rigeur to slag their music in blogs lately (from my reading) and I have to inform all my friends here that I have no intention of stopping my Sublime posts as long as they are sufficiently rare or have a good enough sound. So, enjoy this little bit of sunshine from the LBC and have a great day.

Jim Croce - Live: The Final Tour


I was going to share this bad boy here for my 100th post but am a bit past that now so here we ae. One of the best things about doing your own blog is not having to cater to anyone else's musical tastes. If people coem and visit and download - that's great. But it's the sharing of music that really touches you and holds a special place that's important. I really hope at least one person who has never listened to Croce will be turned on by this post and my blog. Some of my earliest musical memories are from his great songs and I feel there was a great loss to the world by his dying so young. The man had a great gift for communication in song and I doubt his like may be seen again any time soon. This live show demonstrates his gift for putting his real-life experinces in song. It's not often that we get a glimpse of how a song becomes what we hear on radio and records. Jim lays down some great and funny stories and also plays impeccable versions of his hits for a grateful crowd. It's a tragedy that soon after this show his life would be over in a plane crash. Give a listen and you, too will be convinced. Pay special attention to the 'trucker dialogue' and the "Ball Of Kerrymuir' - great stuff.

The Simpsons - Songs In The Key Of Springfield


Have I never before here at the Ape shown my love for The Simpsons? My mistake - I am old and forgetful nowadays and these things happen. I often find myself and my family watching a Simpsons re-run in lieu of some other 'newer' show just because at least a re-run is guranteed to be funny and entertaining while a new show has no such assurances. I am lucky in that my family loves the show, especially my 9 year-old. The subversively intellectual nature of the show and the wonderful music always make for a good time. I often feel less bad about spending time in front of the television after a Simpsons episode. I was one of the fortunate few who got to see the early Simpsons Movie footage at the Comic-Con in San Diego this year and I am sure it's going to please all fans. Matt Groening and all the writers were very cordial and answered questions - a good time was had by all nerds in attendance (especially this one). Do yourself a favor and give a listen - you will be converted. ONE OF US.....ONE OF US....ONE OF US.....

Tears For Fears - Best Of Remixes (Import)

One of the very few remix discs thatt I can be bothered to listen to, quite frankly. The over-the-top songs and tight studio production of this talented duo have, oddly, made for great remix fodder. All the usual suspects are here for your eager ears to consume and appreciate. I have noticed recently that I have an emberassing amount of remix cd's in my collection that I would never even bother to waste my time to hear but I have always had a soft spot for these songs and do very much enjoy them in their new, expanded lives as well. Social Distortion - Live Easternatch German Television 1997


Mr. Mike Ness and company. Does it get any better? I doubt it. I know very little about the origins of this one other than what is expressed in the title here. I found this little gem at one of my faves 'hangoverheartattack' and am forever grateful. Beinga longtime S.D. fan, I am always glad when a bootleg of a live show is made available - regardless of quality. I just snap them up on sight. Luckily, this one is pretty damn good and I enjoyed it. Having seen Social Distortion for the first time (finally) in Dec. of last year only reaffirms my faith in music and life in general. Keep fighting the good fight Mr. Ness and I hope to see you again.
